In 2008 Burnham Racing initiated the concept of racing bicycles on an automotive course. Two years later we have two days of such training criteriums to enjoy.

Saturday we return to Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit. Sunday the South Chicago Wheelmen welcome us to the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, a course it first tested on a Tuesday night last summer. Together the races form C.O.U.G.A.R.

Chicagoland Omnium Using Great Area Racetracks

and modest cash prizes go to the overall top three riders in each category (except for 5’s and 4/5’s).

Both courses are flat with gentle, beginner-friendly turns. Take note of any robust wind, as it will make a big difference toward breaking away and the timing of your sprint.

Elsewhere, Kenosha Velosport holds its series finale in Pleasant Prairie on Sunday, and I know a few of you will be heading to Michigan on Saturday for Barry-Roubaix, a difficult, hilly mix of on- and off-road terrain.

Meanwhile, I leave this afternoon for 10 days in Belgium. What better way to simulate the conditions of Hillsboro-Roubaix?

In my absence I have some posts scheduled to pop up on race days, which I hope you will use to link to your reports and photos.

Saturday Spring Super Criterium USAC criterium South Beloit, Ill. Distance from Chicago: 1 hour 2 hours

Barry-Roubaix Gravel Road Race USAC road race Middleville, Mich. Distance from Chicago: 3 hours

Sunday SCW Spring Criterium USAC criterium Joliet, Ill. Distance from Chicago: 1 hour

Kenosha Velosport Spring Training Series ABR criterium Pleasant Prairie, Wis. Distance from Chicago: 1 hour

Luke must drive as fast as he climbs if he can make it to Blackhawk in 1 hour. I’d put it closer to 2.

Agreed. The Burnham boys usually schedule at least 1.5 hours to get to BHFs… but that’s at 5am with no traffic. Please plan accordingly.

Also note, the COUGAR races are NOT training crits but full fledged USAC races and the first two races of the IL Cup.

Finally, the ICA will be using Twitter this year for real time updates from races (start delays, weather, maybe results, etc). Please follow us at twitter.com/ILCycling.

Have fun in Flanders Luke!

Two valid corrections. Thanks, guys. I use “training crits” in terms of no filthy lucre on the line (though those are are some generous product primes and prizes).

In 1999 & 2000, there was a criterium called the Madison Speedway Bicycle Classic in Oregon, WI. It was held on an oval 1/2 mile auto race track. Just wanted to add that historical note.

What other auto tracks have been used in the past? Elkhart Lake has been used before (as it will again this year) and one year there was a race on the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis.

Several other auto tracks were the American Motors testing facility (aka MGA) near Burlington, WI. which ABR used in the mid to late 80s and the old Hales Corners speedway, in the Milwaukee area.
Of interest is the Elkhart Lake, Wi Road America course has been used for quite a few years by a private group and this year they will be holding the event with ABR over the July 4th weekend and then just before that, the Tour of American Dairyland (USAC) will be using the same course as part of there series.
