It’s hard to believe we’re barely a week out of arm warmers and it’s already state championship time.

The fight for Illinois honors returns to Peoria on Sunday with the Proctor Cycling Classic. It’s a fun eight-corner course with wide, smooth roads and a short kicker right before Turn 8.

Open the legs up Saturday with The Downer Classic in Milwaukee, a longtime popular Superweek criterium that this year is also part of the Tour of America’s Dairyland.

Saturday ToAD: The Downer Classic USCF criterium Milwaukee, Wis. Distance from Chicago: 1.5 hours

Sunday Proctor Cycling Classic (state criterium championships) USCF criterium Peoria, Ill. Distance from Chicago: 3 hours Previous wrap-ups: 2007, 2008

ToAD: Carl Zach Cycling Classic USCF criterium Waukesha, Wis. Distance from Chicago: 2 hours

Hey all,

Sorry to maintain this theme of complaining about racing fees but I have a question about bikereg. I went to register for Proctor through bikereg with about 4 hours to spare (naturally) and discovered there is still a bikereg service fee. I thought those were going to be nullified with the new standard of $25 race fees. Am I confusing something?

I haven’t raced road stuff much this year and because of that I find the $25 fair enough for my once a month habit. Have I missed something, though? Wasn’t the whole service fee supposed to be swallowed up with the change?

Thanks.

Jeff I also have helped put on cyclocross and mtb bike races (private land and high fees)., where we have permits, time, and rules to follow.  I thing FRG is an awesome course, but I ust thought 20 minutes was short, especially since the cat 4 woman raced longer. No hard feelings…

Promoters have the option of passing the bikereg fee onto the racer, or absorbing it into their race fee (or increasing their race to account for that).

I *think* (check with Jason K.) that the ICA decided to absorb the cost for the Illinois Cup races, but other promoters for non-Cup chose not to depending on their forecasted budgets and costs.

Proctor is Illinois Cup, so I would think the fees would have been absorbed.

At the beginning of the season the ICA asked all IL Cup races to absorb the BikeReg service fees. However at the end of the day the race still belongs to the promoter and they can choose not to absorb the fees. If you think this is unfair we suggest you contact the promoter directly and voice your opinion.

Please bear in the mind however that whether or not the service fee is paid by the rider or the promoter a portion of each race entry is kicked back by BikeReg to the ICA to help further the sport and pay for equipment that is used by all races.

Thanks,
jasonK.

Let’s bear in mind that most (not all) of the other Illinois Cup races simply raised their registration fees by $5 to cover the bikereg cost. Proctor hasn’t done this. Similarly a 2nd race is only $10, compared to $25 for some of the other races - that’s hardly gouging. So one can race twice for between $25-$35, whereas some other races would set you back $55.

Also, this is a big event with a significant prize fund and very large costs ($3k for police alone). Quite an achievement to keep the entry fees so low. They’re basically the same as the Super Spring Crit or Cobb Park, but the event is on a much larger scale.

Forgot to add, Mail in reg was also available. 42 cents and all bikereg fees could have been avoided
