New to Superweek: Homewood

The Superweek schedule has been updated to add a July 13 criterium in south-suburban Homewood. That’s the series’ first Sunday, previously home to the Bensenville Criterium, now scheduled for Wednesday, and makes a total of four Chicago-area criteriums, plus the P/1/2-only twilight criterium in Beverly.

The schedule still has two empty slots, and I have no word on the fate of the Tour of Alpine Valley or the MGA Proving Grounds Road Race.

Lots of Illinois racing in Superweek this year!  Friday through Weds in Bensenville...perhaps Tuesdays Superweek race will be in Matteson??  Ha!

I got a call from someone on a planning commission for Flossmoor asking about info regarding Superweek.  I found out that Superweek requires a 25k investment from the host.  Since there are still days open, I wonder if Flossmoor might fill in one of the remaining days between Homewood and Bensenville.

I found out that Flossmoor and Homewood are working together on this event.

There has been discussion about having a total of four South suburban races the first week of Superweek including Beverly, Homewood and Blue Island. More info should be avialable soon.

Word around town from those who are intimately connected with Otto is that MGA, Alpine Valley and the Lakefront courses will not be returning for the foreseeable future.

Organized opposition from citizens affected by the events has reached a critical mass and the townships have pulled rank and refused to allow the races to happen.

In addition rumor has it that there will be two Bensenville events…

Sadly it also appears that the Green Lake Criterium won’t be back… too bad as that course albeit a bit of a hike was one of the great surprises of last year’s Superweek…

The proving grounds won’t be missed by this rider...who recalls what happened at it a few years ago in the 4/5s?

I am sure the ClifBar Elite team might recall :)

That was pure carnage.

As somebody who lives 1.5 hours north of Milwaukee, I think it sucks that the Green Bay crit, and the Green Lake races got canceled. I am glad that there are still two RR’s on the schedule though.
Word.

Green Lake was replaced with Ripon, which is only 7 miles east.

The loss of the road races should be distressing for everyone. I can see how residents accustomed to speeding through the narrow, windy roads of the Proving Grounds wouldn’t want the course there— I won’t miss that race myself—but Tour of Alpine Valley? Those roads were wide open and sparingly driven.

If this is indeed the result of neighbor revolt, it’s something to think about next time we wander over the yellow line or let a gel wrapper float from our grasp.
