Burnham Racing has announced two exciting additions to its April 6 Spring Super Criterium in South Beloit.

The first is a free skills clinic for new racers, presented by the Illinois Cycling Association and conducted by Randy Warren (XXX Racing-AthletiCo), one of our state’s few Level 1 coaches. It will be held at 8 a.m., early enough for those competing in the women’s 4’s or men’s 5’s races. I will be involved with the clinic and thus am somewhat biased, but I strongly recommend attendance for anyone entering their first or second seasons of racing. It will be well worth leaving the city a little earlier.

The second announcement is a team competition. Points will be available for every race and prime. The winning team will have a contribution made to World Bicycle Relief in its name. Neat!

Luke or anyone involved in the clinic, can you tell us a little bit more about the clinic?  What types of skills will be covered and where will the clinic be held?  It won’t be directly on the course, right?  Will the clinic serve as an adequate warmup or, if we’re doing the Women 4, do we need to plan on a very abbreviated warmup afterwards?  Sorry, lots of questions.  This will be my first crit and second race (Hillsboro is first!), and I’m just a bit nervous.

I don’t have the exact agenda from Randy yet, but based on clinics I’ve seen him give before, it will include balance drills, bumping drills and possibly cornering exercises. I’ll see if I can get more information. And no, it won’t be on the course itself. (Juniors will be racing at that time.)

As for a warm-up, I think the clinic will only get you halfway warm. It’s not going to include any of the hard efforts you want in your warm-up. I recommend having your trainer ready so that you can hop on for a quick 5- to 10-minute spin, including a few 30- to 60-second passages near LT. I’m sure there will be plenty of time for the women to get at least that much in.

Thanks, Luke.  This helps—especially the bit about the warm-up.  I was just mostly concerned about fitting in the clinic and having enough time to be sufficiently warmed-up prior to the 9:15a start.

Oh, is it a 9:15 start? For some reason I thought it was 9. But wait, it’s actually 9:30! So you and the other women have PLENTY of time to warm up, if you pre-register and pick up your number beforehand.
