[ 2008 XXX Racing uniform ]

XXX Racing-AthletiCo on Friday unveiled its 2008 uniform. In a bold departure from previous color schemes, the black kit will pay tribute to the two riders the team lost in 2008, Beth Kobeszka and Pieter Ombregt. (Ombregt, some may remember, was known for wearing a black jersey when he rode unattached prior to riding for XXX Racing-AthletiCo.) Overhauling a uniform is no small gesture, and the team hopes that the kit will highlight its efforts to improve safety in 2008 and be a stark reminder of why safety is so important.

(Note also that the team is overhauling its Web site for 2008. I secured the webmaster’s permission to give CBR readers an exclusive first look.)

that kit is 100times better than anything else in the Chicago Peloton. Big ups for xXx for ditching the ugly 2007 kits and going for something this awesome.

I agree--it looks fast standing still.  Good way to remember teammates.

It’s so hard to please so many. I know they’ve undergone some hard decisions in the past regarding the kit.

Tell me this, though, how is a black kit going to “highlight its efforts to improve safety”. I would think just the opposite, especially when riding at night.

Either way, xXx deserves a lot of credit for remembering their own. A great group of people.

xXx doesn’t conduct team rides at night, and with the exception of some 24-hour mountain bike events, it’s quite rare to be racing at night. People do wear parts of their kits, like the jackets, for commuting, but most commercially available cycling tights are black anyway. So I don’t think there’s really a compelling argument to be made that black kits are somehow less safe than other kits. I am on xXx, and I am thrilled with the new design.

That’s a good question. One way will be as a talking point. You’re in a race or on a ride and people are going to ask, “What’s with the black? Didn’t you used to be red?” And we’ll get to say, “We’re doing this because ... And some of the things we’re doing to improve safety are ...”

Another way will be to remind people of what’s at stake out there and think twice before crossing the yellow line or bombing a corner.

Night riding is a legitimate concern. The presumption, I suppose, is that if you’re riding at night you’re going to be sufficiently lit up, front and back, regardless of what you’re wearing.

Glad you like it, Robin!

Mission Bay, eh?  Color scheme, whatever, the big change in my mind is a certain shop that’s been replaced.  Speaks for itself.

Good eye, Ju^^ Joe Q. That’s indeed another big change for the team this year. An announcement to the public will be forthcoming, and if you’re involved in the team, you know whom to ask about it if you have questions that haven’t been answered at our meetings or in our forum.

The black kits going to look sharp a lot longer than the mostly white ones last year.  Nice!

First off, Joe2wheels isn’t jealous because he sports the black and white kit of team killjoy.  I am disappointed that XXX’s kits are very similar to ours now. We are such a small team that our black and white kits have always made us so visible and distinct. :(

Get ready to feel very indistinct, Holly. Everyone and their mother has a black kit this year.

It’s true. XXX won’t be the only team going mostly or all black this year. In fact, we’ll be installing streamers on our bar plugs so we can identify teammates up the road.

I blame Rock Racing.

Good. Will this please stop some of your guys from wearing the ugly ass pink skinsuit, or the leopard leg warmers? Really. Stop.

Hey isn’t that the unattached jersey look too?  The kit looks new and fresh, I likes.  But having previously been with Vox and our black kits.  Come July I think you will reconsider when the heat comes to play.  Best of luck.

Black is the new black. I like the kit, and perhaps that didn’t come across. It’s much better than the “Euro” design from a couple years back (IMHO).

And nothing beats the skulls of Killjoy.

FWIW, I was on xXx for four years when living in Chicago. We were always expected to wear our sponsors about town – whether commuting or otherwise. So, since Chicago is dark at 4:30pm for a good part of the year, I wondered how the black kits would help.

Luke has some strong ideas on that and I’ll agree with his sentiment. But it certainly doesn’t make you more visable or safe at night.

I agree on the black not being visible enough to cars at night.  I ride at night and would be concerned about that.  That was the first thing I thought when I read the part about highlighting safety, that I didn’t see how black would accomplish that. It is a great looking kit, though!
And I agree that “nothing beats the skulls of Killjoy”.  You guys had the cool black kit, complete with skulls, looong before black was the new black!

Let’s just say all of us are going to be suffering at Spring Prairie in our new kits if it’s 80 and sunny (one advantage to white).  I hope the new Pactimo moisture wicking fabric really works!  The one great thing about black though is that drivetrain grease stains will be less noticeable...:)

I’m confused. Why isn’t anyone saying nice things about the new Web site. Are your Internets broken?

For one, I wouldn’t call the pink skinsuits “ugly”. What you rockin’ performance vest? :D Pactimo makes great fabric so we aren’t worried about the black attracting heat.

Luke, the site looks very good.  Thanks for all the dedication and leadership on the issue.

I don’t know that the internet is broken...let’s just say that some one has a case of the Mondays.

Isn’t that more important than anything else?  Who gives a shit who had a black kit first.

Not to open an old wound, but I like the new kits for this year.  Black is pretty badass, but all the same I think it is a really nice gesture from the team to the riders families.  It is really fitting, I wouldn’t be able to think of any better way to comemorate two team members.

Thanks, Ben. I wish fashion were the reason for the change, but, God willing, it will be for one year only. Next year we’ll have a special 10th anniversary kit. Rumor is that it will be all-pink and will be the first uniform to ever feature stars, faux carbon fiber AND argyle.
