The Midwest Cycling Series, an 11-day, 10-race evolution of the formerly two-day Wisconsin Cycling Series, this morning announced four of the Wisconsin venues for its June 10-28 event: Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Manitowoc and the fabled Downer Avenue course in Milwaukee. All four have been locations for Superweek races, and many consider Downer Avenue to be Superweek’s crown jewel.

The MCS also announced that Jack Hirt (Velo Trocadero) will be executive director.

The implications are unclear.  Does this preclude the sites from being Superweek races, too? And will the Midwest Cycling Series expand to Illinois?

What’s not unclear is whether this is a shot across Superweek’s bow. Not only is it a shot across the bow, but it’s a grappling hook over the rail and a smart rap on the captain’s quarters. Indeed, take a look at the five bullet points the MCS promises riders: 1. Full range of fields; 2. Large purses; 3. Affordable entries; 4. On-time races; 5. Full support of the Wisconsin Cycling Association and USAC. Whether MCS can follow through on these promises remains to be seen, but these points seem crafted to address complaints riders have had with Superweek.

Twice in the past hour people have e-mailed me to tell me they’d heard that Superweek was no more. This is the first I’ve heard that rumor and my inclination is to discount it. Superweek certainly faced some difficulties in 2008, but in August, Breakaway Event Productions had already announced 2009 dates that included one extra day of racing.

I’ve solicited more information from both series. I’ll update this post as there is more information to report.

UPDATE: Breakaway Event Productions’ Andy Garrison writes to confirm that Superweek is still on for 2009, and that Downer Avenue is still scheduled for Saturday, July 25. He points out that the other Wisconsin sites named today haven’t been part of Superweek for several years. He says Superweek has focused on sites closer to Milwaukee and Chicago that he says draw more riders and spectators.

“We will continue to provide the highest quality racing as in the past,” Garrison says. “We will continue to improve things and make them better. We wish the Midwest races the best, and feel that if they do well it will enhance cycling for all of us.”

Since when is the Midwest strictly Wisconsin? Bring some races to Minnesota.

Did Mr. Garrison mention if Breakaway Productions is going to send checks for the 2008 series before the 2009 series starts?

I am sure the city of Milwaukee loves the idea of shutting down Downers Avenue on two separate days. You know, it is such an easy task and all.

Mark my words. No Downers Avenue race in July.

I don’t think the shops on Downer Ave would mind another festival on their street. Heck, Cafe Hollander sponsors a team! The good folks on the east side have always embraced cycling and I don’t think they mind the detour in traffic. Noting the big names involved with the Midwest Cycling Series, I’m really looking forward to it. There is a rich history of bike racing in the Fox Valley area which has been missing lately and I feel this series will be a wonderful addition to the calendar in 2009.

Any word on the breakdown between road races and criteriums in this new series? With Superweek, the Chicago Crit, and Crit Nats all centered around the Chicago area, the last thing Midwest cycling needs are more crits. As Hillsboro-Roubaix shows us, there is a huge demand for quality road races in the midwest. The Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference puts on several challenging road race courses in WI, IL, and IN in the spring. I, for one, would love to see some more road races in this new series. Who’s with me?

One of the guys heading MCS is the owner of Team Type 1. My guess is that there will be some road racers to help attract the talent.

Also, the lead in to the MCS on the national calendar is Nature Valley Gran Prix here in Minnesota. My guess is that Team Type 1 and other pro teams will want Road Races to make it “worth” there while.

A little birdy tells me 2-3 road race venues for the new thing. The same birdy says that Breakaway Event Productions has fallen asleep at the wheel and cities are looking for an alternative (lest we forget the non-payment issues with MGA Proving Grounds Road Race).

SuperWeek became very weak after Otto left.

I can’t vouch for what the birdies or other voices are whispering in Super Rookie’s ears, but in this Journal Sentinel post, MCS organizers say they are shooting for “at least two” road races.

I just wonder what the relationship super rookie has with The Midwest Race Group?
“a little birdie says”, give me a break!

If the Midwest series wants sites we gave up years ago because they did not produce the results we require or meet our expectations, they can have them.

For your information Otto Wenz is still very involved, he is the Race Director.

OK, while everyone is busting Superweek’s chops, let me say this:

The Blue Island and two days of Bensenville racing was superb, as were other days, but those two were especially well run and safe. I hope to see Superweek back again in 2009.

However, could we make the EGP course a little less dangerous? Seriously. Or name it something more appropriate, perhaps the Evanston Crash Prix…

What the?

“If the Midwest series wants sites we gave up years ago because they did not produce the results we require or meet our expectations, they can have them. “

Did not produce?  Fond Du Lac, Sheboygan and DOWNER did not produce?  What the?

If stupidweek wasn’t such a half a** run series then people wouldn’t b*tch about it and Garrison wouldn’t have to get all defensive….btw, have they paid ALL the racers yet??? I wish I could pay the bills for my business on my own time frame!

Superweek and Mr. Garrison have a long way to go to regain racers’ trust.  And platitudes such as “We will continue to provide the highest quality racing as in the past,” don’t help.

I think it is importantant to understand that producing an 17 day series has thousands of details. If one item like setup has problems you are in trouble. We have had the same set up crew for several years and 1 week before the race this year one of the main guys cancelled due to his Mother getting sick and she died during SuperWeek. We lost another one of the main setup guys when his truck engine blew up driving
in for the race. If you remember we asked for volunteers to help with set up and we got minor response. We were able to get some temps hired who were not reliable and did not know the setup and had never done the races before. These problems did cause some delays in races starting and some races being shortened. What we will say is that we apologize and will do better next year.

We will continue to strive to be the best, and will look forward to always making improvements to be the best. We invite contructive critical comments, however we don’t want negative non-productive comments, rummors, or false comments that are designed to undermine our efforts.

We thank all of the riders that participated in 2008. The rider participation makes SuperWeek the largest Multi-Cat race in the world. The race lasts 17 days and fields more riders anually than any other race in the world.

We should be proud to have this wonderful series in the Chicago /  Milwaukee area.Intead of trying to tear it down and be a Monday morning quaterback, help us to make the series and the sport better.

The SuperWeek Team; Andy Garrison, Mike Garrison, Jon Riemer, Otto Wenz and our staff.

Andy,

Thank you for being so accessible to us.  I must say that I agree with you when you say that putting on superweek is a daunting task.  I live in Illinois and like having races in both states that are somewhat easy to get to.  I do not want this to change.  That being said maybe it is time to redefine what superweek is.  Something to consider is that you guys are biting off more than you can chew.  Maybe it is time to scale back and really make it a superweek or ten days, something like that.  All it will take to win people back is make it an event to remember.  Smooth sailing all the way.

It seems to me that the biggest problems arise with the setup of the courses.  How is it possible to do this efficiently with only one crew, and then have no backups.  Why not have two set up crews? A race day crew and one that is out in front, and make sure that you have two sets of keys to the truck.  Remember that mess?  If not,  the guys need to be up at the crack of dawn setting up, not as I arrive.  That is time for the final touches not slapping a race course together.
This crew can also look at the race course prior to you taking a vote amongst the racers seeing if they want to race around raised sewer covers.  I was truly embarrassed for you guys.

Things happen and you should be prepared. We got caught, we could not see this coming is no excuse.  Remember this is a huge event with lots of details.  Yes you have a tough job, but you had to know this going in, right?

I don’t want you guys to get beat up….. but I would like to see you guys step it up, And if not someone or some group will.  The ball is in your court at this point, you hold your destiny.

I just want to race my bike.  I want to race it on safe courses within a few hours drive.  I want to race on time.  I want at least one other person to race against.

For the privilege I am willing to pay entry fees and even eat at local establishments.

The rest is noise.

Gary,

We appreciate the contructive comments!

We are not looking for sympathy, and we are right here to face legitamate comments and concerns.

We have great experience in producing this race, but we can always learn and improve and that is our goal.

I also want to thank you for the clarity on the Bensenville Course last summer.

just to clarify the racing commitments of downer avenue merchants association (DAMA) for the summer of ‘09:  DAMA has committed to the MCS for a full day of racing including a belgian beer festival, yard parties, Ben’s cyclery superprime, etc on saturday june 27th.  negotiations for a twilight, pro race only event for superweek are ongoing but have not been signed off on.

Hey Andy,

I appreciate you monitoring and replying to these comments.  Says a lot about how much you care about taking Superweek in the right direction.  Having said that, here are a couple of quick thoughts from my first year (5 race) Superweek experience:

1. Is it possible to have registration either set up on time, or not publish that it will open “2 hours before race time”.  Some of us pathetic Cat 4/5 types were getting up at ungodly hours, driving a long way, and showing 2 hours early only to find that, not only was registration not set up, nobody knew where it would be.  This is especially problematic at the events where we knew we’d have to get there early to register or possibly not make the field.  And, there nothing more nerve wracking for a new racer than being 25 deep in a registration line 20 minutes before you’re supposed to toe the line.

2. Consider a tiered entry fee.  I think that atleast 3 (if not 4) of the 4/5 or Masters 4/5 races were cut short… some significantly.  With race fees being in the neighborhood of $30, it doesn’t take much shortening of the races before you start wondering if it’s worth it.  With the good possibility of those races getting cut significantly short (not to mention the gross number or riders being pulled prematurely), perhaps it’s time to re-structure the entry fee system.

Having said that, I mosly enjoyed superweek.  I’ll be back in 2009, in whatever form it takes.
