John Olin, owner of Highland Park’s Higher Gear Bicycles, died unexpectedly Tuesday. He was 51 and the father of two teenage girls.

Mass will be celebrated Saturday Sunday. Memorial contributions can be made to the Olin Girls Educational Fund or to the National Kidney Foundation.

Update: The Chicago Tribune wrote an obituary, including touching comments from Jeff Miller, to whom Olin donated his kidney in 2002.

Johns enthusiasm for cycling was amazing and contagious!  We (Saturday riders) always looked forward to visiting John at the shop.  He was always offering a warm piece of clothing to wear home when we were freezing.  It is due to him that I ride my favorite bike and got to meet Dario Pegoretti in person.  I will miss him.

So many of the people that I’m fortunate to know and ride with, I met through the Higher Gear rides out of the Fullerton shop. I miss that community, but I owe much to it. In his passing, I’ll direct that gratitude towards John. Condolences and warmest wishes to his family and friends.
