  • » This week’s Tour of California has a few Chicago connections. Today’s wearer of the yellow jersey, Tyler Farrar (Slipstream), won a national championship at Downers Grove in 2005. His teammate Christian Vandevelde is a native of Lemont. Riding for Jelly Belly is former ABD rider Bryce Mead, and riding for Kelly Benefit Strategies is Reid Mumford, formerly of XXX Racing-AthletiCo and ABD. Riding for Toyota-United are 2007 Elk Grove winner Ivan Dominguez and the Clarke brothers: Hilton won at Elk Grove and Downers Grove in 2006, and in 2007 Jonny raced Superweek and other local crits. Finally, winning Monday’s women’s criterium was Brooke Miller (Tibco), who recently did a short stint in the Chicago area. Kristen Meshberg (Flatlandia) was there, too, and finished 36th.

  • » Rarely a week goes by that someone doesn’t ask me to cover the track. Or cyclocross. Or mountain biking. My standard reply is: “Meh. Do it yourself if it’s so bloomin’ important to you.” Happily, people are finally answering my challenge. Welcome The Bone Bell, a site devoted to mountain biking and other dirty pursuits in the Chicago area.  And welcome Midwest Time Trial, compliments of my teammate Peter Allen. That takes care of two disciplines. Who will now step up and claim chicagotrackracing.com and chicagocrossracing.com?

  • » Speaking of disciplines other than the road, Lawyer Jim is getting through winter by thinking about the coming bike polo season.

Way to go, Kristen! I’m going to have to zapruder through the versus coverage to see if I can see you in the pack.

Thanks for the props, Luke!  I had no idea people would find the site so quickly as it’s still under construction (and needs to be proofread).  Lots more to come and I’ll be adding more events as I hear about them.

I’ve love to see others add chicagotrackracing.com, etc.  We can’t forget the dirtbags as well...there’s a lot going on with the WORBA and DINO series (chicagodirt.com?).  Too many wheels, too little time.

Oops, I meant WORS series...there’s a reason copywriters have editors.

And, in addition to proofreading, make sure you don’t multitask at work and miss reading the complete post that mentions what you’re writing about above.  Note, The Bone Bell is a cool site and is additional evidence showing that us cyclists seem are little obsessed with out sport.  OK, this should hopefully be my last correction comment.

Doesn’t that imply your site should be chicagoroadracing(withAlittleBitOfCross).com, or are you just the parent company in the umbrella?

;)

Danka Schon for the mention - and yes, the bonebell surely does cover all that is dirt related.  I believe cyclcross being the bastard child of road and mtb disciplines (I’ve always envisioned a sleek carbon road frame having mated with a burly downhill rig to have produced the zippy offspring of the cx ride - an opposites attract theory) is so variant in who loves it that it will cross the dirt and roadie sites as if it were the only discipline allowed to do so.

CBR is a great pleasure to read for one and all - thanks Luke!

Touche!

I could ... but I’m too much of a micromanager and perfectionist. Already I spend three minutes editing and noodling for every one spent writing. I’d spend half my day making sure everyone put their apostrophes in the right spots. There would be mutiny within the week.

What about Penny Farthing or hipsters on fixed gears?

Those both really rolls off the tongue.

Luke, I think you really need to broaden your focus.  Lots on bike realated niches you are missing out on.

They are referring to Reid as “Johnathan Mumford” on cyclingnews’ and velonews’ live coverage of the Stage 5 time trial!

That’s his given name and I presume the name that appears on his license.

For about 10 minutes there he was in first place. He’s still clinging to the podium. Woot!

And a good showing from Bryce “Byrd” Mead in the breakaway yesterday.  Midwest Represent!
