With big races such as our state championship and Superweek right around the corner, this weekend is a good opportunity for some final fine-tuning. It’s also a good chance for beginning racers to maximize their Cat 5 experience before jumping into the 4/5 whirlwind of Superweek.

Saturday the South Chicago Wheelmen return to Kankakee for the Cobb Park Criterium. Pre-registration will save you $5. It’s a fast, flat three-corner course. The Wheelmen are also putting on a new-rider clinic at 10:30.  I highly recommend this for many of our Cat 5’s.

Put down that cheesecake if you plan to tackle Sunday’s Fox River Grove Cycling Challenge. It features a ski-jump climb (above) that may feel like the Alpe d’Huez by the end of the day. (I do not know if the recent flooding will impact the course. I’ll post if I find out anything definite. UPDATE: Ricard Otero (Team Mack) drove the course and reports there are no flood-related obstructions.)

Note that Illinois Cycling has brought its Illinois Cup standings to life. Both of these races earn points toward the seasonlong series.

To pursue the big money and big crowds

and big competition

head to Wisconsin for the Wisconsin Cycling Series. Both days feature more than $12,000 in prizes, and Saturday’s twilight pro race in Grafton should be particularly exciting. Be sure to pre-register, as entry fees go up $10 on Thursday.

Saturday Cobb Park Criterium USCF criterium Kankakee, Ill. Distance from Chicago: 1 hour

Giro d’Grafton USCF criterium Grafton, Wis. Diistance from Chicago: 2 hours

Sunday Fox River Grove Cycling Challenge USCF criterium Fox River Grove, Ill. Distance from Chicago: 1 hour

Sheboygan Family Centre Bike Race USCF criterium Sheboygan, Ill. Distance from Chicago: 3 hours

Luke—Fox River Grove, would you say that’s a big ring climb? Would it be wise to use a climbing cassette? Where is the start finish in relation to the hill?

Funny, I was wondering the same thing myself. I’ve never done the course myself, so I can’t say for sure.

Then again, any climb can be a big-ring climb ... if you’re strong enough.

Anyone? On a scale of Winfield Twilight (big ring) to Snake Alley (small ring), where does this climb fall?

I haven’t done it either, but I heard the hill is steeper than Spring Prairie and a little shorter. Sounds like the cassette sizing is the question, not the big/small ring.

Unless you’re Jens Voigt or Mark McCormack… small ring for sure. Put on at least a 25 in the back… I think I used a 26 last year. You could big ring it a few times, but lap times are about 5-7 minutes, so after 30-45 minutes & 5 or 6 times up the hill when the race really starts, you won’t be able to match any accelerations in a 53 x 23.

Also, the course ran anti-clockwise last year and the S/F is on the far right hand side of the image above… about 50 meters before the left hander that takes you up the hill.

One final note: Last year the roads were completely closed off on the entire course for each race and then briefly opened in between races. There’s basically no parking to begin with, so just park in the back of the shopping center and ride the 1/4 mile to the start.
Also, be nice to the neighbors and thank them for allowing us to close down their streets for an entire day just to let us ride our bikes around in a big circle!

As for Cobb Park:

Two things I know for sure.

1). We’ll play the best music of any bike race in the area.

2). George Ryan will not watch the race from his front lawn this year.

Word on Jason K.‘s comments. Last year I went up it a few times in 53x23 and 53x21 (during attacks, chases, and hard accelerations). Other laps, when the pace was a bit steadier/easier, I switched to the small ring.

There is no comparison between this and Winfield. Winfield is very short and definitely a big ringer. Also no comparison to Snake Alley which is quite obviously a small ringer. Point is that this thing is just steep enough and just long enough (not that long, actually, but just long enough) to make it a really bad idea to stand up and big ring it every lap (you’d have no pop left by the end of the race). Could you? Yeah, sure, but why would you?
