Burnham Racing and Vitaminwater-Trek have quickly come up with a spring criterium to replace the series we had hoped would happen in Vernon Hills.

The Spring Super Criterium will take place April 6 at the Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, about two hours from Chicago. Discounted pre-registration is available.

“It’s a rally course,” says Eric Goodwin (Vitaminwater-Trek). “Twists and turns like Laguna Seca without the elevation. There are some false flats though.” This video of the 1.9-mile course makes the turns look as gentle as they come, and indeed it looks more like a circuit race than the criteriums we’re used to. I’m looking forward to it.

We all will miss Parkside, but this should be a good, low-key tuneup for the season ahead. I expect it will draw teams from Madison and Milwaukee. Masters racing is available for the men, so there will be no reason not to race two or even three times.

Gad Zooks!

So you’re telling me that if I’m over 30 I can race three times on a 1.9 mile course with sweeping turns, a slightly undulating profile that’s three-cars wide and surrounded by soft grass and beautiful forest!

And look, this course is good for beginners , breakaway artists and with a super-wide and log drag a sprinter’s dream!

Wait, proper bathrooms, changing facilities,. shelter and ample on-site parking too!

I wouldn’t miss this race for the world… oh wait...I CAN’T miss this race we’re hosting it!

In my case, I am not going to treat it as three discrete races but as one single race—a super race, if you will—that starts at 1:45 and ends around 5:10. I won’t even bother to unclip as one event bleeds into the next.

In fact, I hereby issue the official CBR Cat 3 Old Fart challenge: I promise a prize for the person who races the successive Cat 3 races—masters 1/2/3, 3/4, 1/2/3—and beats the most combined competitors.

Bitchin’ Thanks to the vitaminwater-trek guys for finding a venue.  Talk about deja vu, we used run these roads all the time in college (Beloit College).  Plenty of low traffic roads around the race track to warm-up on.  My recommendations for directions from Chicago would be I-90 and exit Rockton Road, rather than the IL-75 exit because there will be less traffic.  If anyone wants recommedations on where to eat/drink after the race, let me know as there several places in SOBO with CHEAP beer (think $1).  Now, I just hope the weather cooperates.

And yes, it is true, I guarantee that anyone who races on April 6 (men or women) is likely to have ALOT less leg hair than the women at Beloit College...:)

Brian, grabbing a sixer or 40 at Everett’s Liquors and watching the powerboat races along the Rock River is much more exciting.  Almost as fun as Wisconsin’s second-largest music festival, Riverfest, which features top musical talent like Steppenwolf and Eddie Money (nothing can touch the Nug at Riverfest in ‘96 though).  Don’t underestimate the social scene of the greater Stateline area (where mullets and poofy bangs never went out of style)!
