The Superweek technical guide is out, including course information for the Tuesday and Wednesday Bensenville races.

It’s an interesting course, and by “interesting” I mean, “At least there’s lots of parking.” About half the course appears to run down some sort of recreational path. Perhaps someone more familiar with Bensenville can inform us. Can we ride more than two abreast there, let alone sprint for the finish line? (I could be wrong, but the map in the technical guide suggests the start/finish sits about halfway down this path.)

Update: I missed this when it was first published last week, but CyclingNews has an item about some of the troubles Superweek is having. Scroll down to the seventh item. (Thanks, Matt.)

CRITICAL, ALL-CAPS UPDATE: Superweek’s Andy Garrison e-mails me with a clarification that will put most of us at ease: “We have worked with The Village of Bensenville for over a year on this project. The path that is shown on the map is now 24’ to 25’ wide in all areas. The Village has repaved the area with fresh new pavement. Mayor John Giles and the Village have made a huge commitment to bike racing and moved the race to the park to coincide with an event that culminates on the 16th at 8 p.m. with a free concert featuring The Gary Puckett Band. There will be the usual food and beverages and $4,000 in guaranteed primes.”

Hooray for Bensenville!

Here is a Bensenville Press story detailing some of the events: “Bike race, other events switch to weekday slots.”

Course Fail.

From highly scientific Google Earth/TerraServer comparisons it appears that the path is about as wide as a wide car- think lakefront path.  I suppose it is a consolation that the path has no apparent curbs so that when one is sent askew into a lawn they will go…eh…

Luckily the organizers saw fit to continue the tradition of running large fields through parking lots thanks to the right turn off George St.

Yay Superweak!

this is going to be interesting, especially for the lower categories.

I seriously doubt this course complies with the rules.

3D. Criterium
3D1. A criterium is a circuit race held on a small course entirely closed to traffic. The length of the course is between 800 m and 5 km. The minimum width throughout the course should be 7 m.

23 feet.  Course fail.

Wow this looks a little scary.  It looks like there are a couple kinks in the path that will be pretty tortuous depending on the speed and size of the pack when it gets there.

I hope this isn’t what it seems.

What is going on with the Superweek people? You’d better be at the front. I foresee the peloton splitting in the narrow section.

From the looks of it the path is no wider than a parking space.  Maybe they should run a cross race instead of a crit…

Well, if the S/F is where they say it is, I am going to go line up now.  The first 2 people there will make up the front row at the start…

Thanks for the update.

I can let my Jump To Conclusions mat gather more dust.

Maybe the course is good-to-go… better than that ‘modified’ figure-8 Bensenville course from the other year (Yikes!) BUT, did anyone see this article <http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2008/jul08/jul02news> about the Garrisons’ others shenanigans? And Heidi isn’t the chief ref this year, hmmm.
