[Beth Kobeszka at Monsters of the Midway]

Our worst fear. Our greatest possible loss.

Beth Kobeszka (XXX Racing-AthletiCo) was struck by a vehicle and killed during Saturday’s Proctor road race near Brimfield, Ill.

Doctors declared her brain dead upon arrival at the hospital. She was kept on life support, then allowed to pass Saturday evening with her family at her side.

The crash occurred in the finishing stretch of the women’s 4’s race. My understanding is that she was bumped across the centerline and came into the path of the truck, which was towing a horse trailer. The course is known to have narrow roads, but I do not have information about the conditions at that point of the road, and I have not yet cared to probe or speculate.

Beth was 24, an honors graduate from Northwestern and an organ donor.

Her last race was the Cobb Park Criterium. She came in first.

And she was a teammate of mine.

We called her “Beth K.,” because there already was a Beth on the team, and what daredevil tries to pronounce that name anyhow?

She joined us this year, and I did not get the chance to know her well enough to do her service here. But just from the few times I met her, I know that she was spunky, smart and supportive. As a cyclist, she was talented and selfless.

I invite friends and family to use the comments here to tell us more.

Here is a story from the local ABC affiliate. There is also a brief in the Peoria Journal Star, but its comments have already been filled with so much bile and ignorance that I cannot in good conscience link to it.

Here is a gallery of photos at the XXX Racing-AthletiCo site. Non-teammates who would like to upload photos can e-mail them to me.

I will update this post as there is more information available. There will be opportunities for memorial and tribute, but details have not been announced.

7/2
9 a.m.: Here is a more complete story from the Journal Star, but again the comment section has been visited by uninformed, occasionally hateful debate about roads.

11 a.m.: Here are two stories from the NBC affiliate, with videos: “Cyclist Dies in Crash,” “Cyclists React to Crash”

5:30 p.m.: Local teams are sharing their condolences: Team Clif Bar Midwest, North Branch Cycling, Team Get a Grip Cycles. In addition, I am told that Turin has committed its winnings from the weekend toward Beth’s memory, and the women of XXX have been particularly grateful for the love and support of Team Kenda Tire.

10:30 p.m.: The Chicago Tribune has a story in Tuesday’s paper: “Cyclist aiming for another win killed in race.”

10:45 p.m.: CyclingNews has a story, “Cyclist killed in midwest road race,” which includes comments from another participant in the race. “I just saw people getting tangled,” said Katie Haft (Morris Trucking), “and one woman fell into the side of the trailer.” Haft mentions prior violations of the centerline rule, but I’ll note that no witness has asserted that such a violation

by Beth or any other rider

led to the fatal crash.

11 p.m.: Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening, July 5, at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 2828 Highway Ave., Highland, Ind. A funeral will be held Friday morning. Check back here or at XXX Racing for location and time.

The family has not yet named a benefactor for memorial contributions. In the meantime, funds can be sent to the team, which will hold them and distribute them per the family’s wishes. Information about a bank account for this purpose will be available later this week.

7/3
12:30 a.m.: Chicago’s NBC affiliate ran a story tonight including comments from coach Randy Warren and cyclist Francine Haas (Alberto’s).

11 a.m.: Parade laps will be ridden in Beth’s honor at tonight’s Matteson races and Thursday night at the Northbrook Velodrome.

1:30 p.m.: Arrangement information has been released. The wake Thursday will be from 2-8 p.m. at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 2828 Highway Ave. A funeral service will be held there Friday at 10 a.m., after which there will be a procession to Our Lady Of Grace Cemetery. (Please note the corrected time. Also, Highland is in the central time zone.)

2 p.m.: The Northwest Times of Indiana has a story: “Highland native killed in bike race accident.”

6 p.m.: Gigi Norcross (XXX Racing-AthletiCo) has uploaded photos from Friday’s criterium, including the parade lap ridden in Beth’s honor.

7/4
1:30 p.m.: The Northwest Times of Indiana now has an obituary, which includes a Legacy guestbook.

7:30 p.m.: The Fagen-Miller Funeral Home also has a condolence book.

7/6
1:30 p.m.: I just returned from Beth’s funeral services. Mourners from the many families that Beth touched filled every seat at the funeral home and spilled into the hall and adjacent rooms. The sermon naturally included a drafting metaphor: As we let ourselves be pulled, so must we pull for others.

2 p.m.: Here is an affecting account of the crash and of knowing Beth from Brooke Schuman (Kenda).

3 p.m.: The Daily Northwestern has a story: “Northwestern alum dies in cycling accident.”

7/7
1:30 p.m.: NUSports has a story, including a picture of Beth running cross-country in college.

7/10
8 a.m.: Various cycling communities are discussing the crash, usually leading to a discussion of the importance of the centerline rule. (I’ll reiterate: Nobody has yet said Beth or anyone else was intentionally violating the rule at the time of the crash.) In St. Louis, a secondhand account claims the truck was going very fast, an allegation I’ve heard other women in the race make. In Minnesota, a witness also estimates the truck was going at least 40 mph and adds that the crash had begun before the truck was within sight.

A discussion on preventability is an important one, but although I provide these two links, I do not want to start one here. I’d like the comments to remain about Beth, and comments about the centerline rule will not be approved.

5:30 p.m.: Beth’s family has named the Hancock County Community Foundation as a memorial benefactor. Tax-deductable donations can be mailed to her mother: Vicki Kobeszka; 1536 Misty Oaks Drive; Findlay, OH 45840. Include your name and address.

I was informed of Beth’s death this morning before the Judson ride.  I was a bit overcome, as I had only had the opportunity to meet her just after her Cobb Park win last week.  The three of us on the ride this morning were pretty quiet.

I Googled her name this afternoon, in order to find more information on the accident via a news site, but instead found pages, several pages, re: her charity work and her years of competition in track, X-country, triathlons, and most recently, xXx Racing.

She was also an Academic All-American at Northwestern.

That’s quite a legacy.  All I know is I’ll never get to see or talk to this wonderful person again, whom I only just met formally last week.

Beth was my sorority sister and we lived together in the same house for a summer. She was also a very active member of our Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern. She was bright, beautiful and so dedicated in whatever she did.

I am another of Beth’s sorority sisters, and was fortunate enough to live with her during her senior year. She was a fighter and one of the funniest people i have ever met. Her loss is an incredible tragedy, and I consider myself lucky to have known her.

I only had the honor and privilege of knowing Beth for two years but in that time, I experienced her as fun-loving, dedicated to whatever she was involved in, full of integrity, honorable, hard working, kind, so incredibly supportive, curious and searching for the “truth”, wonderfully idealistic and so full of optimism.  No matter what was going on in her life, she worked to find the compassion and humor in any situation, never giving up.  Circumstances brought us temporarily very close only this past January when I was witness to her true strength in a difficult situation.  Even then, she continued to be of help to others, consciously choosing to move forward in her life with zest and joy.  Now she won’t be calling me for that “long chat” she e-mailed me about and I can’t believe how much I miss her already and continuing to get to know her better. I am doing the Danskin Triathlon this Sunday and I will do it in her honor.  We both did it last year and she was always so supportive; even when it took me almost three hours to complete it she helped me feel so good about just doing it.  That’s the kind of person she was.  I am grateful for the sharing available in this space.

I ran cross country with Beth at Northwestern. I had lost touch with her since graduation but I can see she is still the same Beth: dedicated, competitive, caring, giving, funny- a great friend. She had so much to offer. My prayers are with her family.

Beth and I were teammates on xXx.  I met her at a crit in Parkside, WI in March of this year and got closer to her at our training camp in Bloomington, IN.  She had such a wonderful, confident energy about her that just drew you in.  We got closer as the weeks passed and shared so many bored during the day text messages and calls.  She convinced me to go see Knocked Up because it would be stupidly entertaining, not just stupid and she was right.
Beth was a fierce competitor, determined to do her best.  She was a great teammate, so positive and encouraging.  And such a wonderful, caring person overall.  And that smile.  She could just light up the room.
I feel so lucky to have had Beth in my life, even if it was only for 3 months.
My thoughts are with her family and with all of those who were lucky enough to have known her.

Beth and I were and are good friends.  She was a great competitor in every way.  I met her in a Muay Thai class 4 years ago(Thai boxing-very brutal sport) at EAC in Evanston Il.  No matter how much home work, no matter how much pain she was in, if you needed her, she was there for you.  I must say, like many others.. I am in shock!  Beth you are a knock out! I have not one bad thing to say about her except she cared too much!  You will be missed by all of your friends and loved ones. The thing is Beth passed doing something she loved.  I wish I will be able to say the same for myself.  I will miss your high kicks and right cross’s.
Deepest regret

I knew Beth from Northwestern and the Sheil Center.  Beth had a great sense of humor and was a bundle of energy.  I really got to know Beth while on a Spring Break trip to Mississippi where we volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. I don’t know how she did it every day. She would go for a run in the morning, work all day in the blistering sun and go for another run in the afternoon. After that, she would still have energy to play with the local kids.  We’ll miss you Beth!

I am so sorry for your loss.  I did not know Beth, but am hit particularly hard by all of this because it truly could have been any one of us.

BK sounds like she was such a cool person and I’m sorry I never got the chance to know her.

I only knew Beth through a few races, but I was very impressed with her tact as a racer. I looked her up after that first race because of her potential as a competitor but was then equally impressed with all of her other accomplishments. Beth was definitely someone special.

The first time I met Beth, she kicked my a$$.  We were at the track doing this pursuit style training and she was dusting me.  I yelled Gap, Gap.  We were probably going 26 mph.  New to the track and group riding—she thought I was saying “Go, Go” as in go faster.  I watched the speedometer go up to 30 mph and after two laps I was three bike lengths behind—just faded out and hollered “slow the @%$ down!”.  Then we got into a little bit on an argument and then realized that we had a communication problem.

That said-this never changed our relationship because she wanted to do everything she could do to get faster and develop a sprint.  She was hungry to win.  On top of that, for a new racer—I really loved her fascination with breaking down the race and thinking about what happened, what was good, what she could have done better.

I’m not surprized to learn that she was into Thai Boxing…I bet she tore it up.

I am deeply saddened by this tragedy.  I myself never met this beautiful woman, but I can almost imagine the shock and sadness her family must be feeling.  My father, brother, and future sister-in-law all cycle competitively, and I know in my heart, that it could be anyone at anytime.  That day, I could not make it to watch the race. I called my mom to ask how my loved ones did, and I could not believe my ears when I heard the tragic news.  I am from Central, IL and have been watching this particular race for more than a decade. I hope this experience opens everyone’s eyes to the hazards brought upon by these race courses.  I express to everyone in Team XXX all of my heartfelt support, as a woman, athlete, and fan of cycling.  My prayers go to Beth’s family.

Beth was my cross country teammate and Northwestern, and I have to say that I have never met a more dedicated and motivated person.  She faced a lot of injuries and setbacks during her running career, but she still trained as hard as she could and her passion never waned.  I’m not doing her justice with this description, but I think I speak on behalf of all of the wildcats when I say that Beth will be missed.

Beth was truly a magnificant woman. She had so much heart and drive for living life to the fullest. She was an amazing teammate and friend. I will never forget last fall when Beth and 2 other women from xXx and I were training for a 4-woman team time trial. She was so geared up for it and ready to kick some butt. Of course she just made us suffer with each lap of practice and when we asked her to ease up, she would just look at us like “what, that was too fast?” We just smiled. I lined up with her at a couple races this year and each time you could just see the determination in her eyes. She was always there to encourage, support and make you laugh. Man, was she funny!!

BK, you will be missed dearly, and I will always crank the music for you to drowned out the Kenny G.
