Tip #33: Don’t mix in with other fields

You’re in a road race and you get popped. It happens. Someone turns the screw, you can’t cover a gap and suddenly you’re wondering where everyone went. We’ve all been there. (My first season, I was there a lot.)

It’s lonely off the back. You’re dejected, you’re tired and you still have 30 miles to ride without the benefit of a draft.

Suddenly a train of riders comes up your left. Wahoo! Free ride!

Do you hop on?

No, not if they’re not the same field as you. More than likely they’re a higher category or a masters field. Your day is done, but they’re still racing.

Why is it bad form to integrate?

First, it’s cheating. You’re getting help that you’re not entitled to. Chances are they’ll pull you up to the next straggler on the road, thus improving your placement. And if you take any pulls, you’re giving them help that they are not entitled to, which is grounds for relegation.

Second: Sorry, you’re just not welcome. It’s not that you’re not a nice guy or a strong rider, but for all they know your skills may still need some refining. The fast guys you caught on with don’t want their paceline interfered with by an inexperienced rider who can’t hang on to his own field. If you’re not an expert in echeloning, for example, a small mistake can bring everyone down.

Don’t take it personally. Just be patient and wait until you find riders with race numbers from the same series as you.

And then destroy them in the sprint.

Ya, that’s all fine and dandy, but what if they combine fields at the start line??? Those fields that were lumped together are now in the same race, no???!!!

So, if you happen to be a rider in one of the higher cats and get dropped, there’s nothing to say you can’t grab onto the lower field that is coming up from behind that was incorporated at the beginning of the race. UNLESS the official stated at the beginning of the race that the combined fields even though starting together are NOT racing together! If the fields are combined into one race and it is not signified at the start line that there are different races taking place even though a multiple classes start together...its all fair racing...take advantage of the faster dudes pulling you up!

werd!

Agreed. If you start together, it’s totally appropriate to race together.

I’ve never observed officals tell fields not to mix even though they started together. Does that happen?

Mostly I bring this up because at Saturday’s Leland Kermesse, my chase group in the 1/2/3 would often pass 4’s and 5’s and they would try to incorporate with us. I’m hoping they read this and realize I wasn’t trying to be a jerk when I told them to scram.

Somewhat related to this was something i saw in the 30+ race.  We passed 2 riders who looked to me to be doing their first race ever complete with a handlebar mirror.

The rider in front of me cut back in front of the two so close that it totally freaked the guy out.  In a pack of experienced riders no big deal, but it seemed pretty risky with a rider of most likely little experience.  it would have been a shame to have a crash caused by this.

for what it’s worth, i’ve seen it happen in “reverse” too. IE: the 4/5 chase group @ `08 Hillsboro found a few dropped 3’s and/or masters leeching off us. it’s pretty easy to tell by looking @ bib #s.

long story short; swallow your pride and don’t do it.
