The Fox River Grove Omnium presented by PSIMET went off this past weekend.  Both Saturday’s Elgin Cycling Classic and Sunday’s Fox River Grove Criterium provided not-your-ordinary courses, and there was some really excellent racing. Fantastic!

The CBR weekend weather forecast looks awesome!  And fortunately we’ve got some great racing:

  • PSIMET’s Fox River Omnium is this weekend: first up is the Elgin Cycling Classic  on Saturday, May 18th and then on Sunday, May 19th, the  Fox River Grove Criterium. These are both excellent courses and the fields will be stacked.
  • For CBR Northerns the Wheel & Sprocket Crit in Neenah, WI is on Saturday, May 18th, and the Wheels on Willy in Madison is on Sunday, May 19th
  • The Alexian Brothers  Tour of Elk Grove Village on the weekend of Aug 2nd, has added some fun and pizzazz to the event- Bob Roll will be on hand to call the race and there will be expanded television coverage (not sure if that will be a good thing or bad thing for me…)
  • Higher Gear has sent us a number of updates to their training ride schedule - check them out
  • Another reminder on the cycling survey - remember there’s a $25 “product incentive” for participants

Great upcoming races and a few good tidbits for this week:

  • This Saturday, May 11th, is the Chicago classic:  Monsters of the Midway, and registration is open through today at 11PM (don’t play the weather hedge - sign up!)
  • A great weekend of racing at the Elgin Cycling Classic  on Saturday, May 18th and then on Sunday, May 19th, the  Fox River Grove Criterium.  There’s still plenty of time to get some hill repeats in and conquer that beast at FRG - here’s an old video lest you forget!
  • If you’re up north, Wheel & Sprocket Crit in Neenah, WI is on Saturday, May 18th, and the Wheels on Willy in Madison is on Sunday, May 19th
  • The South Chicago Wheelmen just announced they are putting on the inaugural Downtown Homewood Classic on Sunday July 7th.  This fills that little gap we had between ToAD and Prairie State Cycling Series - and btw you can follow them on twitter @scw1923
  • We just added the Herman Miller Brickyard Criterium in Grand Rapids on Saturday, June 29th to the CBR calendar.  Looking at that weekend - how do you pick which races to do?!  We are blessed!
  • Javelin Bikes in Lake Zurich is hosting a second-Saturday-of-every-month ride. Varying distances and speeds so all are welcome.  And I bet you can check out a few Javelin bikes while you’re there!  First ride is this Saturday, May 11th starting 9AM
  • A sports marketing company - Receptivity Group - is looking for product input from we hardcore cyclists (I think they call us “enthusiasts”) - please take their survey. And btw there’s a $25 “product incentive” for participants - and knowing the client company, its probably something pretty decent!

Anatomy of a Race Series: Glencoe to implement F1 style grid

Pat McNally spoke to Jon Knouse, the race director behind the Glencoe Gran Prix about planning and preparation for the June 1, 2013 race

PM: Tell us about this new starting grid you keep texting me about

JK: We have always believed the GGP to be a cycling event and not a bike race. To some, that may be a matter of semantics, but we are really interested in providing an overall great experience in addition to great bike racing. One area we thought was lacking was the staging. We generally see it being an inelegant experience. That is to say, some riders do what is asked of them, some hang on barricades, others skip the free lap or enter the course where they see fit, all in the name of getting to the front. It seemed to be the wild, wild West. So we decided to end that by staging the riders like a Formula 1 race, without the qualifying laps. Our qualifying laps are the USAC rankings of the riders.

PM: How will it work?

JK: Ten feed feet behind the starting line will be row 1. There are ten places per row so everyone is spread out and the places are set equidistant between the barricades. Then every five feet another row until we have 12 rows of 10 (120 places) and a 13th row of 5 for a total of 125 places (our largest field size which is the pro men). On the ground, you will see an AT&T Globe with a number on it. A rider will enter the course, look at his/her bib number, match it to the number on the ground and place the front wheel on the decal. All riders will enter the course in the same place. Once everyone is set, the referees will check to see everyone is placed properly. Call–ups will then be done, which will work great as everyone will be spread out so it will be easy for the rider to work his/her way to the front. After call-ups, referees will release the rows one by one to fill in around the start line like a traditional race. The referee will give his instructions, then race!

PM: And how will pre-registration or day-of registration factor in

JK: It will be extremely important to pre-register. All same day registrants start in the back of the field.  You may be the best Cat 3 on the planet, but if you register same-day and are rider number 76, you start in 76th position. However, if you’ve pre-registered, you can sign in, get your race numbers and fully concentrate on your preparation and warm-up without having to worry about getting to the starting line. We’re trying to make it as easy as possible.

PM: What made you think about changing the staging process?

JK: I attended every day of the Ryder Cup last fall at Medinah Country Club (two days too many!)  When the Americans came out of the clubhouse to head to the first tee, they walked over a bridge, were announced over the PA and the crowd went nuts. It was really a grand entrance. I thought the scene was electric. I immediately wanted to do something similar with the GGP (without the bridge). This is what I came up with. As an aside, we are taking suggestions for entrance music for each race as the riders stage. We’re open to just about anything within reason (and that can be played in front of little ones). We plan to solicit suggestions by race over at the Glencoe Gran Prix Facebook page, but I’ll gladly take suggestions here too. We’ll give preference to those actually in the race, so if, for example, if Jason Knauff suggests something for the 30+1/2/3, we’ll consider that over my eight-year-old daughter who will suggest One Direction for every race. That is, unless he suggests something by Neil Diamond

More on the GGP: This is the 7th year of the GGP. The race benefits Glencoe Educational Foundation, as well as schools in Chicago, specifically, Holden Elementary and Johnson College Prep. It is hard to believe this is the 7th year already, but time flies when you are having fun I guess. We’re once again part of the National Criterium Calendar and also this year we are part of USA Crits, which allows us for the first time to live stream our event, and elevates the profile of the GGP further as part of a nationally respected crit series. We are not hosting the IL State Criterium Championships this year, but we know St. Charles will do an awesome job with it.

The season is picking up momentum!  CBR’land weather getting a little better and lots of good racing coming up:

  • The Spring Super Criterium in Beloit is this Saturday, April 6th - remember its the first race of the Illinois Cup.  Eric Goodwin tells us they’re on pace to break the record for number of racers. The Cat 4/5 races could fill-up so be sure to register before pre-registration ends on Thursday
  • Also, Spidermonkey Cycling and Burnham Racing are offering free registration for the Juniors events, but only with pre-registration (an entry fee will be assessed on race day).  Did I mention pre-registration ends this Thursday and that you should pre-register?
  • And the following Saturday, April 13th, the Lincoln Park Criterium presented by XXX Racing-Athletico - click for pre-registration and the race flyer
  • Registration is now open for the Saturday, May 11th Monsters of the Midway
  • Here’s Jim Barclay’s (XXX Racing-Athletico) race report for Barry Roubaix
  • Chris Moore (Sammy’s Elite) posted this race report on last weekend’s Marian U Midwest Classic
  • Hillsboro Roubaix results have been added to www.road-results.com - I love this site!
  • We corrected a number of ABR races - they DO have Citizen / Cat 5 and Scarlet Fire 2-Person TT is on Saturday, June 15th, .  Please double-check race flyers beforehand
  • We are looking to take our race reports to another level - and are looking for reporters!  There might be something in it for you - so drop us an email if you’re interested.
  • Lastly, Spring must be close because the fabled MidweekGem has returned, the first edition is TODAY. 5:30 from the corner of Dempster & Chicago Ave in Evanston. According to the organizer “You know the drill, race paced ride, not for the timid”. twitter.com/MIDWEEKEGEM

Just a few notables for the week:

  • We haven’t received any official word yet, but one of our “Johnny on the Spot” CBR readers found this related to a possible Sunday, July 14th addition to the Prairie State Cycling Series in Crystal Lake.  This leaves just Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday…
  • While we were selfishly focused on Hillsboro Roubaix, others in CBRland opted for the equally excellent Barry Roubaix.  Check out Sammy’s Elite race report, and some video. This is definitely a different type of racing!
  • Only 10 days until we kick off the 2013 Illinois Cup with the Spring Super Criterium in Beloit on Satuday, April 6th.  Don’t play weather-roulette—just hurry up and pre-register!
  • And while you’re at it pre-registration is also open for the Saturday, April 13th Lincoln Park Criterium presented by XXX Racing-Athletico
  • We are looking to take our race reports to another level - and are looking for reporters!  There might be something in it for you - so drop us an email if you’re interested.

The 2013 Hillsboro Roubaix was another success!  Full results are posted, plus some photos,  The course was (as always) tough - a combination of early season form (or lack thereof), punchy-but-tough rollers, and a demanding finishing run-in that includes 2 climbs, screaming downhill and 500 meters of bricks.  Most races saw small breaks get away, with chase efforts muted by strong cross- and head winds on the backside of the course.

Here are a few other race reports to check out:

This may have been the most miserable week of riding the whole winter season!  Fortunately we’ve got some great racing coming up (finally!):

  • Spring Training officially opens this weekend - with Kenosha Velosports’ Spring Training Series - in easy-to-get-to Salem WI.  Wunderground weather says Sunday’s weather will be a balmy 37 degrees and low chance of rain.
  • Hillsboro Roubaix  is 10 days away, and pre-registration is only open unitl next Wednesday, March 20th.  Don’t wait unitl day-of to register (the promoter is begging you!).  This race is well worth the drive!
  • The Lincoln Park Criterium on April 13h, has opened pre-registration
  • Its never too early to dream of summer time racing - ToAD registration is now open.

Starting with points accumulated on January 1, 2012, you will keep your points, forever, and they count towards upgrades. There is right now no limit to how long your points will count.

I spoke to Tom Mahoney, Technical Programs Manager at USA Cycling to clarify this. As for the reason behind the change, he said that Steve Johnson requested this change because in some areas, it is extremely difficult to find the quantity and quality (field size) of racing for those intent on upgrading, particularly from category 3 to category 2.

Points are hard to come by with smaller fields, (this page hasn’t been updated to reflect the new upgrade rules).

From the USAC site, here is the official document, which also covers cyclocross upgrade changes.

Road Upgrades

The 12-month window for accruing points for road upgrades has been removed for all categories. This rule goes into effect in 2013, so 2012 points will roll forward into 2013. However, this will not be used retroactively to years prior to 2012. Juniors are no longer forced to upgrade to either Category 2 or Category 1, even if they have accrued the mandatory upgrade points. They may upgrade if they choose, but such an upgrade will not be forced.

There are four ways a rider can upgrade from Category 4 to Category 3. A rider can accumulate 20 points, compete in 25 qualifying races with at least ten top-10 finishes in fields of at least 30 riders, or have 20 pack finishes in fields of at least 50 riders. The fourth way a rider can upgrade would be to amass 30 points in a 12-month period for a mandatory upgrade.

For Category 3 to 2 road upgrades, riders must accrue 30 points instead of 25. 40 points in a 12-month period is still a mandatory upgrade.

For Category 2 to 1 road upgrades, riders may upgrade once they have accrued 35 points. 50 points in a 12 month period is a mandatory upgrade. Note that only 10 points from training series or masters races may be used for upgrading.

Road Season 2013

What is going on with the road the last few years

It was the year 2009, and things were great for road racing in Chicago. We had the Evanston Grand Prix, the Chicago Criterium, the Glencoe Grand Prix, and of course Superweek was still firing on 5 of 8 cylinders. Chicagobikeracing.com was going full bore, so we could always see what the rest of us were up to.

Flash forward to 2013, and things are much different. Superweek seems to have run aground, the Evanston Grand Prix is gone, and so is Chicago Criterium. Then to make matters worse, a bearded guy in a XXX windvest walked into our living rooms and took away the little hyper-local slice of our racing world. Sure, Jon Knouse is still promoting a heck of a great race, xXx has hit a grand slam two years in a row with Galena, and Marco Colbert and Tom Schuler have added great new venues and they’re working very hard to construct a race series that will be around for years to come. Of course there are even more races that I am failing to mention, but the wins seemed to be outpaced by the losses in races, and in spirit.

The way we communicate has changed in that time, too. Instead of cogent paragraphs and lasting content presented in some sort of order, people are distributing tiny conversations all over the place in the form of status updates and tweets. I knew I would miss CBR when it started to wheeze, but I didn’t anticipate how much, and that even with the increased frequency of small news bites, how disconnected I would feel from the larger road scene.

On top of all this, the competitive landscape seems to have changed. The pent-up desire to have 5 sets of Zipp tubular wheelsets was finally satisfied when the chicrosscup deathstar became fully operational. Open race weekends perhaps reminded people how much fun it is to just hit the group rides. If you needed a little bit more competition, you could satisfy your sweet tooth with Strava.

This year feels much different to me though (Maybe it was me all along who felt like the road scene was sagging when in reality it wasn’t). In measurables and in non-measurables, the arrow is pointing up for the first time in a few years. We have some great new races and even a new race series to look forward to. Guys who have concentrated solely on cross the last few years have been training this winter with the road in mind. The winter group rides I’ve been on have been spirited even in the dark of night, and there are some fresh new faces at these rides. Traditional venues like Beverly will once be teeming with a variety of languages. There are new teams eager to make their mark.

CBR is back too obviously, and with it, some of the energy that I missed. We are looking forward to the year ahead, and will need your help and your voice.

Cheers to what I think will be a great 2013 road season. What do you guys think?

-Pat

Prairie State Cycling Series Announces Venues

Feb 10, 2013

Mark your calendars, the Prairie State Cycling Series will be one of this year’s premier race series. We got a sneak peak into the venues and here’s what the race will hold for us this year:

•    July 17th , Wednesday - the Sharon Cycling Classic (RR) (Sharon WI)
•    July 18th, Thursday - The 11th Annual Beverly Hills Cycling Classic criterium (Beverly)
•    July 19th , Friday- The Elmhurst Cycling Classic criterium (Elmhurst)
•    July 20th Saturday - The Northwestern Medicine Lake Bluff Criterium (Lake Bluff)
•    July 21st, Sunday- Sammy’s/Dreyer St. Charles Criterium (St. Charles)

Prairie State Executive Director Marco Colbert explained that the Prairie State series is under the same organizing group behind the Tour of America’s Dairyland, which speaks well to it being a quality run event. He is genuinely amped about being able to build off of last year’s success in St. Charles and Lake Bluff, and make the 2013 PSCS bigger and better.  His promotion group saw a wide-open, some would say gaping, hole in the race calendar, so they jumped on the opportunity to extend the Prairie State program. USA Cycling validated their hard work and awarded the series slots on the National Criterium Calendar.

We’ll have more on the race venues and from our conversation with Marco in a later post, but it is really interesting to get a behind the scenes view into race promotion. Marco and his team have a real passion for cycling – these are the guys making our race days happen so let’s do whatever we can to support them, not the least of which is to just show up and race. The Prairie State Cycling Series runs from July 17 to July 21 – and they may not be done yet for 2013.

Flatlandia Pulls the Plug on Leland Kermesse

Bad news: one of the most popular races on the calendar has run its course. Flatlandia has decided to pull the plug on the 2013 edition of the Leland Kermesse, much to the chagrin of racers much more robust than me. I was fortunate to have suffered a concussion a week before the 2012 edition of the race, and was therefore not allowed to participate. Even though I was never fond of the 100mph winds, rain, and gravel, I am fond of the people putting the race together, and that’s why I always vowed to try again next year. One of those who worked hard to make the race happen was Berwyn’s own David Pilotto. I was able to get the attention of this excellent VW mechanic (seriously) and get his take on what happened.

Dave, how did you get the idea to run this type of race, and what made you think anyone would want to race it?
Leland started as Jason Wagner’s idea, he used to promote a race in paw-paw IL and he loved the area and thought of putting on a truly IL road race. After studying google maps he found what looked to be a cool circuit in a small town named Leland. We packed our bikes and took a drive, after one lap we knew it was perfect. A few emails later, we had a race. It is a truly Illinois road race, wind, cornfields, gravel, flat roads, poor weather.

So what the heck happened?
After putting the race on for years we decided not to put it on in 2013. There was not one reason for this decision, just many factors that played into it. The race will not continue as a Flatlandia run race.

Did you ever consider modifying the race?
Yes, in 2012 we planned on making the race course continue east of the school, over a small wood bridge and through a farm field, but that would have added the cost of closing main street in Leland and paying the farmer to use his field, so we decided against it.

Would it have helped if it were State RR?
Probably not, but the timing would not work anyway, need to have the race early in the year, the farmers are very active June-August and it would not be a good time to host a safe race, we had a combine pull on the course and drive against the race direction, no one was injured but it was a crazy situation.

Was it strictly a financial decision to pull the plug on the race?
No, but the race is a huge strain on our club, we are a club of less than 40 people, it takes 50 or more to safely run this road race, last year Jason Wagner’s dad drove a lead car, and his wife worked registration. My wife drove from Berwyn to Leland just to drop off the lunch because we could not spare one person to pick them up. The O’Fallon race has 400 people working it.

I am a saddened that the race was not embraced more by the local cycling community, we have our hardcore fans that do it every year and love it, but as a race it was never successful enough, monetarily.

This was not an easy decision for me, Wagner or our team. Seeing the Kermesse develop from nothing was a great experience that changed my life.

What’s the biggest challenge you faced as a road promoter?
Combines. No seriously there are many challenges, money being a big one. Registration was stagnant: racers numbered 225-245 people the past 2 years. We hoped and thought it would grow into a larger event.

How big of a production was it to do the race?
For a small team like flatlandia, it was a huge production, I estimate 1,200 man hours for the whole race.

What could racers have done to change this outcome?
They could have encouraged more fellow racers and teammates to come to Leland. That being said, even if we had 1500 racers every year there is no guarantee the race would have continued, because the demise of the Kermesse is not all about money or numbers.

Did the race make money?
Very little, $0.66 per man hour in 2012. We were very close to losing money in 2012. If we went into the red this year it comes out of mine and Wagners pocket, and we are both poor ass motherfuckers.

Why did you do it?
Because we love bike racing and wanted to display our idea of what bike racing in Illinois is.

What about next year
We have plans for something, I can’t go into details, but flatlandia don’t fuck around.

What was the best part about putting on the race for you?
That people enjoyed something as simple as riding on gravel in the middle of nowhere.

What was your favorite memory from the editions of Leland so far?
Watching everyone race in the worst conditions with a smile.

***

So there you go, Leland no more. While there will be better news ahead and soon, what Dave says I’m sure resonates with every other promoter.

A New Era for Chicago Bike Racing

I’m excited to announce that Chicago Bike Racing will continue.

Starting immediately Pat McNally and Ralph Schroeder, will be the owners, editors and your main contact points for Chicago Bike Racing. I will continue to provide my thoughts and perspectives.

If you’ve ridden or raced with Pat or Ralph, you know that they share my passion for cycling. They’ll be curating CBR for the same reasons I did: They love Chicago bike racing, and they want to help its community have all the information and resources necessary to thrive. (McNally is no stranger to CBR, as his CycleAnalyze coaching service was a longtime sponsor.)

Pat and Ralph will continue with the formula I used over the years, and they look forward to building and involving the Chicago racing community. The 2013 race calendar is being compiled and updated, and the regular flow of news posts will resume soon. Indeed, the 2013 season is already gathering steam, and their first news report should follow shortly.

Please join me in welcoming our new hosts. I’m grateful for their support, and I think we’re all going to benefit from their contributions.

Thanks for the great ride

After six seasons of maintaining Chicago Bike Racing, it’s come time to wind things down completely. I’m afraid there will be no more weekly notebooks, and I will no longer be updating or maintaining the team, ride or race directories. I will keep them online, but use them at your own risk.

Like racing itself, maintaining CBR involved thousands of hours of work and quiet suffering, but the occasional triumph made it all worth it, as did the dozens if not hundreds of friendships and acquaintances it created for me. Thank you, readers and fans, for joining me.

See you at the races,

Luke

Serving as president in 2012 will be Loch Miwa (Flatlandia), whom most of us know as an official and moto-referee. Joining him will be Scott Knoepke (Psimet) as vice president, Vanessa Buccella (Iron Cycles) as secretary, Matt Riezman (Rhythm Racing) as treasurer and Mia Moore (Robots Powered By Love) as member at large. Outgoing president Steve Hansen (North Branch) has served for the past three years and served as vice president before then. Our racing scene has enjoyed some major advances and growth in that time, and we all owe him and his fellow board members thanks.

American Bike Racing has come up with a state road race championship this Sunday near Kankakee.

Elite fields will race together but be scored separately for the 18-mile rolling course of the Two Rivers Road Race. Cat 1-4 men will race together

start together, that is

and go for 72 miles. The $25 registration fee will be day-of only.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s big money Tour of Elk Grove has confirmed some big teams for both the men’s and women’s fields. Among the record 125 professional men will be national criterium champion Daniel Holloway (Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth), former champion Brad Huff (Jelly Belly) and international stars like Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare), Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia) and Alejandro Borrajo (Jamis Sutter Home).

For the first time in several years, Chris Horner (RadioShack) will not be in attendance. (He’s working on some post-tour issues.

Evanston Grand Prix to return to Superweek

The Evanston Grand Prix, which had been scheduled for Aug. 21 and slated to be on the National Racing Calendar, will instead take place Sunday, July 17, and be a part of Superweek, its home since it made its debut in 2007.

The move follows an injunction Breakaway Event Productions sought in Cook County Chancery Court against Turin Bicycle and Chris Mailing, who had organized the race in previous years and who had sought to run it independently in 2011. In its filing, Breakaway claimed Mailing had agreed to run an Evanston criterium for Superweek in 2011 and 2012.

To avoid litigation costs, Mailing said, the parties agreed to a settlement in late May that is scheduled to be finalized soon. As part of the settlement, Mailing will organize the Evanston Grand Prix as part of Superweek in 2011. Moving forward, Breakaway will own rights to the name “Evanston Grand Prix,” and starting in 2012 Mailing will be free to promote his own race in Evanston.

The July race will not be an NRC race. The August date had the potential to draw blockbuster fields, with the men’s national championship and a women’s NRC race taking place the day before in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Reached for comment, Breakaway’s Andy Garrison said: “I am glad that we were able to work things out with Chris Mailing, and we look forward to producing the Evanston Grand Prix for its fifth year.”

Vernon Hills remains canceled, but this effort saves one of the most distinctive races on our calendar.

The race will not be part of the Illinois Cup and may not have the full range of categories, although the schedule isn’t final yet.

Curtis says if the race makes any money it will be split between Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County and the Village of Fox River Grove. “I am only doing this to save the race,” he says. “I feel and the board feels that continuity is most important.”

Top 20 Chicago bike races

Mar 14, 2011

Race previews, Glencoe Grand Prix, Superweek, Tour of America's Dairyland, Tour of Elk Grove,

Comments (9)

Over the past few weeks I have updated the CBR race calendar with what I know about the 2011 season. I won’t be doing weekly previews this year, but I thought I’d put together a list of the races I’m most excited about. For new racers or anyone else planning their season, this may be a good place to start.

As always, your mileage may vary. Important factors in my ranking include character, prestige, difficulty and proximity

with concessions for personal bias and sentimentality.

20. Monsters of the Midway
May 14
It’s not the most exciting course

a flat rectangle with unrestricted sight lines

but it’s a beautiful and historic location and always has a collegial atmosphere. (It is a college, after all.)

19. Team Wisconsin Spring Classic
April 23
Several races take place in this botanic garden near Milwaukee, but this is my favorite. Three short stairstep climbs facilitate breakaways, and the uphill sprint is always exciting.

18. Wheels on Willy
May 15
Madison is crazy for bikes and it shows here. It’s a fun, interesting criterium course that gets a great turnout from local residents.

17. Spring Prairie Road Race
June 5
So popular among Chicago riders is this race that a few years ago it added an out-of-state 4/5’s field so that we wouldn’t muck with the Wisconsin riders’ state championship. It’s a simple, rolling rectangle of a course, notable for a short wall of a climb that will not only define the final sprint but can cause a selection on any given lap.

16. Tour of Elk Grove
Aug. 6-7
It’s not a popular course

the U-turn in Turn 1 is a doozy

but it’s hard to say no to the obscenely large purses up for grabs. This year it’s a UCI race, our first since ... well, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t had one since I got involved in cycling. That’s a big deal. We can only hope this draws some pros from the European scene.

15. Tour of Galena
June 11-12
This is a new event and an untested locale, but this three-stage omnium has the potential to bring high-caliber stage racing to Illinois. Galena is famous for its quality riding and hills, and it hosts one of the Midwest’s biggest triathlons. At three hours away it’s a bit of a trek from the city, but it is hoped that the location and purse will draw not only the best riders from Chicago but also from nearby states. (Full disclosure: This event is being put on by my team, XXX Racing-AthletiCo.)

14. O’Fallon Grand Prix
June 4
It’s a challenging hilly, winding course and for the second consecutive year is our state championship

but dang is it a long way from Chicago.

13. Winfield Twilight
Aug. 13
The Sunday race may be the ABR national championship, but for me it’s the Saturday criterium that’s not to miss. The course is much more interesting, including a long slog of a climb, and few races enjoy better neighborhood support. Here that support takes the form of a block party at the top of a climb, complete with king- and queen-of-the-hill contests.

12. Giro d’Grafton
June 18
This twilight criterium gave birth to the Tour of America’s Dairyland and with great crowds and large purses, it remains one of the top races of the series and is also part of the USA Crits series. Other recommended ToAD races include the sole road race, the Greenbush Road Race, and Tuesday’s unique, hilly criterium at Schlitz Park in Milwaukee. The Madison race at the Capitol should also be cracking.

11. Melon City Criterium
May 29
10. Quad Cities Criterium
May 30
Two of most historic and fastest criteriums of the season and an unforgettable way to spend Memorial Day weekend when combined with Snake Alley (No. 2). This year the top racers will be hoping to parlay their performances into a spot at the prestigious Nature Valley Grand Prix.

9. Evanston Grand Prix
Aug. 21
I’ll admit it: I fear the BK Stacker, that treacherous Turn 5 that has claimed many a collarbone. Nonetheless, this is a very fun downtown race and draws a huge crowd, and this year it’s on the National Racing Calendar for both men and women, so the elite races should be smashing. (Note that while the former Evanston Grand Prix strikes out on its own, Superweek still intends to return to Evanston in July, although no schedule has been released yet.)

8. Fox River Grove Cycling Challenge
May 15
I know my bias for climbing may be clouding my judgment, but every year I’m astonished that more people do not come out for this leg-breaker of a criterium course. With a steep hill that runs up to a ski jump, it shares many qualities with the famous Snake Alley Criterium. I’m also fond of the promoter, Ron DiSilvestro, whose events may be small and local but are rooted in a deep love for bicycle racing. We’re lucky to get a podium at most races, but here the podium comes complete with trophies, flowers and of course podium girls. Ciao, bella!

7. Leland Kermesse
April 16
6. Hillsboro-Roubaix
April 2
In only its third year, the Leland Kermesse is living up to its aspiration to be a Belgian-style spring classic. Like Hillsboro-Roubaix, it takes place on narrow, challenging roads, and for many riders just finishing will be reason for a victory milkshake, especially if there’s a strong wind. Although Hillsboro-Roubaix has history and prestige on its side, Leland is less than two hours from the city and this year joins the Illinois Cup.

5. Beverly Cycling Classic
There is only one race, a twilight P/1/2 affair, but this is a must-attend event for everyone. It’s the kick-off to Superweek, so all the riders still have all their skin and are eager to be the first to wear the series leader’s jersey. The neighborhood is fantastic, a hidden gem on Chicago’s South Side, and the neighbors provide a fun festival atmosphere.

4. Leland Grand Prix
May 14
Road races are getting fewer and farther between. We lost another one this year with the departure of the Circuit of Sauk. Many of us prefer them to criteriums, however, and are happy to drive three or four hours to take one in. Hillsboro-Roubaix may have more cachet, and God knows that in early April we are all champing at the bit to race, but this is my favorite and well worth the trip north of Madison. Each lap includes two long climbs, the kind of climbs whose tops you can’t see from the bottom, the kind where you spend most of the time thinking, “Does this ever end?” The kind of climbs we dream to contest while on the trainer all winter.

3. Grand Cycling Classic
Aug. 20
Michigan and Indiana races do a pretty good job of escaping our radar, but in 2011 this six-corner crit in Grand Rapids, Mich., will be one not to miss as the men’s national criterium championship takes place outside of the Chicago area for the first time in 30 years. There will be a full day of amateur racing leading to the main event, which for the first time will be open only to American riders.

2. Snake Alley Criterium
May 28
This is one of the most unique criteriums in the world and it may also be the hardest. The course features a steep, famously crooked switchback paved with brick, followed by a steep, technical descent. As the day goes on, the hill becomes a spectacle as rowdy spectators badger and cajole riders struggling to negotiate the climb. The carnival atmosphere is a one-of-a-kind experience, everyone owes it to themselves to enjoy it at least once.

1. Glencoe Grand Prix
June 25
In just a few years this race has established itself as one of the best-run in the area. The new course introduced in 2010 was a hit, and although it won’t be a national championship in 2011, it will be our state championship and will be on the National Racing Calendar for the men.

Hillsboro-Roubaix registration opens Tuesday at 8 a.m. Even though fees went up across all fields, I expect there will be the usual rush on Cat 5 spots for this popular road race, with the 4’s to close soon after.

Meanwhile, registration is already open for the state’s first race of the year, Spring into the Autobahn, a criterium on an auto racing track in Joliet.

Also, I’ve begun populating the CBR calendar. I hope to fill in the rest of the season soon, including more ABR races and more from our neighboring states.

The Illinois Cycling Association on Friday announced its 2011 state championships. The road race returns to the popular (if far-flung) O’Fallon Grand Prix on Saturday, June 4, while after a long run in Peoria the criterium moves to the Glencoe Grand Prix on Saturday, June 25.

Earlier this month the ICA released a preliminary lineup for the Illinois Cup. In addition to the date change for Glencoe, the Peoria Cycling Classic moves to late August, and the Sherman Park Criterium moves to early April in order to free the June 11-12 weekend for the inaugural Tour of Galena, a three-stage omnium that XXX Racing-AthletiCo is planning.

Fields have been realigned, too, reviving the 30+ 4/5’s and introducing a separate 3’s field for women. To make room for that, however, the 40+ and 50+ have been consolidated into a 45+ 1/2/3 race.

Registration is already open for the first Illinois race of the season, the South Chicago Wheelmen’s Spring into the Autobahn on Sunday, March 20. Meanwhile, ABR is starting to publish its calendar, with the traditional three-weekend series in Kenosha starting March 13.

I’ll start populating the Chicago Bike Racing calendar when I have some free time next week.

Some changes for 2011

It’s not yet five months until Hillsboro-Roubaix and already I’m hearing chatter about 2011 preparations. People are changing teams or planning improvements to what they have. Some riders are taking a much-deserved rest, while others are starting their first base mesocycles and setting up new trainer spaces.

And so it is in that spirit of change and renewal that I have an announcement of my own for 2011: Chicago Bike Racing will be going into semi-retirement.

I will still maintain a calendar of regional races, both USAC and ABR. And I will still publish a weekly notebook of fun or newsworthy links. But I’ll no longer be aggregating reports into wrap-ups, I’ll no longer be previewing upcoming races, and it will take news of substantial urgency and importance to rise above a line in the notebook.

Since output will approach a trickle, I’m also going to cease running advertisements effective Jan. 1.

Why?

Because I’m tired.

CBR never quite became the site I originally envisioned, but even with lower ambitions it chewed up more mornings than I can count, mornings I came to wish were spent sleeping, riding my bicycle or — heaven portend — having fun with non-bike activities.

Well-meaning readers have suggested I outsource work to volunteers. It’s a good idea. But I’m a terrible manager. I would spend just as much time hewing others’ work to my standards and my voice as I would spend just doing it myself.

It’s funny: I’ve had this post in mind since mid-June, but I’m still at a loss for words. I’ve put off writing this for weeks. This change doesn’t come lightly. CBR has been fun for the past four years, and I’m grateful for all the connections and friendships it’s created in our community.

I’m especially grateful for those who supported me through advertising, including ABD and CycleAnalyze, who have hogged that upper corner almost since the beginning. And I’m grateful for the dozens of you who bought my calendars over the years or who contributed when I passed the hat two years ago.

That said, this project has always been about love more than money, so most of all I’m grateful for anyone who came up to me at a race to just say “Thanks.” Several times I’ve thought about hanging it up only to have a Cat 5 tell me they were doing their first race and it was all because of CBR. That’s all it took to commit to another season.

When I’m feeling nostalgic I like to look up any ancient results sheet and study the names in the lower categories. It’s a fun exercise. See who has made it to the elites, see who has disappeared, see who is still sandbagging in the 5’s.

Indeed, a lot has changed in the past four years, and we’ve been through a lot together. Like any family, we’ve had our share of triumphs and tragedies, fights and love fests, beginnings and endings. Races have come and gone, equipment has evolved, and race promotion has gotten much more professional.

And some of the changes make it easier to say good-bye to CBR. Relative to 2007, race information is easier to come by, and thanks to Facebook and Twitter, it’s easier to get results and swap stories.

In other words, my work here is done. See you at the races.

USA Cycling today released its 2011 National Racing Calendar and it features three Chicago-area events.

Returning is the Tour of Elk Grove, scheduled for Aug. 5-7. New to the NRC will be the Glencoe Grand Prix, which moves to Saturday, June 25, and the Evanston Grand Prix, which withdraws from Superweek and moves to Sunday, Aug. 21, a day after the USPRO national championships are contested in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Only Evanston will be NRC for both men and women. Glencoe and Elk Grove offer NRC points for only the men.
