  • » The O’Fallon Grand Prix is billing itself as our state road race. Illinois Cycling Association president Steve Hansen says the ICA will announce its full slate of state championships soon. I’ve not done O’Fallon, but its 2009 course featured 1,000 feet of elevation and nearly that many turns in each of its 22-mile laps. This will make for a busy weekend: The next day Wisconsin holds its own state championships with the popular Spring Prairie Road Race. (Tower Racing, which did excellent work organizing our state road races for the past two years, tells me it will not be putting on a race this year.)

  • » The 2009 ICA Awards banquet is scheduled for Saturday, March 13, at Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale. USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson and former national road champion Tom Schuler of Tour of America’s Dairyland are scheduled to appear.

  • » The South Chicago Wheelmen’s Tuesday Criterium Series in Matteson is a local institution, and for more than 15 years a cornerstone of that institution has been official Mark Dorinson. (Mike Kelly (South Chicago Wheelmen) notes that Dorinson is “the one that drove the beat up grey Omni, the one that often forgot his whistle and started a race by saying ‘Tweet.’") Dorinson is retiring from his Matteson duties, and he will be missed.

  • » The Giro d’Grafton joins the USA Crit series this year. That should attract extra firepower to the Tour of America’s Dairyland, and I hope that means both men and women.

  • » This month’s Gapers Block Crit Series sold out both men’s heats. Ten spots in each race, however, are reserved for day-of registrations. First come, first served.

  • » Val Brostrom (Bouledogue Tout Noir) is programming races at the Northbrook Velodrome this season and tells me she’s looking at Aug. 21-22 for a weekend of state championships, rather than spreading events over several weeks.

  • » Cyclocross in the winter Olympics?

  • » This year’s masters national championships in Louisville, Ky., may be your last chance to take part in a nearby championship for a few years: Bend, Ore., gobbled them up, too.

  • » A Chicago Web developer has designed a fantasy cycling game.

  • » Wisconsin Cycling Association’s 2010 schedule is out, and it looks rather familiar, which is great: No sense messing with a great thing. For road race lovers, the Spring Prairie state championships will again be the first Sunday of June, and in May we return to two hilly courses about an hour north of Madison: Circuit of Sauk on May 1 and La Rue-Denzer-La Rue on May 15. (I considered L-D-L an instant classic when it made its debut in 2009.) I’m also happy to see that the Whitnall Park Spring Classic, a very fun and hilly criterium near Milwaukee, is back after a one-year hiatus.

  • » Burnham Racing released its flier for March 27’s Spring Super Criterium, the kick-off of the 2010 Illinois Cup campaign. The boys also announced new shop and bike sponsors, not to mention some nice roster pick-ups.

  • » Our first chance to race outdoors will once again be in Kenosha, Wis. ABR’s Kenosha Velosport Spring Criterium Series starts Sunday, March 14, weather permitting, and continues the following two Sundays. (Raise your hand if you still miss Parkside.)

  • » Yet another new team to look for in 2010: W2 Racing of Arlington Heights is made up of beginning masters racers and triathletes.

  • » The South Chicago Wheelmen are having an open house for juniors Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Homewood.

  • » Doing well at Hillsboro-Roubaix can once again secure a spot at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. Last year Chris Winn (RMCEF) drove 31 hours from Colorado for a shot at qualifying -- and succeeded.

  • » Why I wear a helmet. (Also, why I don’t care for cats.)

  • » There is still much of the season yet to be confirmed, but I’ve started populating the 2010 race calendar.

  • » Several officials clinics are coming up, including a beginners clinic on Saturday, Feb. 20, and moto-ref training on Sunday, Feb. 28.

  • » Another Wednesday, another new squad: This week it’s Psimet Racing, based in Elgin. President and title sponsor Rob Curtis says he’s happy to talk to prospective riders at Saturday’s Chicago Winter Bike Swap at Harper College.

  • » On the national front, Team Tibco, the only American UCI-sanctioned women’s team, boasts three riders with regional ties: Chicago native Rebecca Much, U of C grad Devon Haskell and 20-year-old Samantha Schneider of West Allis, Wis. The question is, Will we ever see them race? There are no longer any major women’s races in the area, and I expect that Tour of America’s Dairyland and Superweek are too small for Tibco to attend.

  • » WCIU takes a look at Ciclo Urbano and its repair classes for women.

  • » “The more you race bikes, the more intellectually interesting it becomes.” If you aren’t reading the blog of Steve Tilford (Tradewind Energy/Trek Stores), you should start. I almost wish he would quit racing so he’d have time to write a book.

  • » I’ve always wanted to do this. I daresay the results would be different at any Chicago intersection. (Sometimes, just for yucks, I come to complete stops behind each white line while driving through a neighborhood. It’s like going the speed limit on the interstate: You feel like a complete weird-o -- and people get pissed off and honk at you.)

  • » Rapha pays a visit to Blue Mounds, site of one of 2009’s most popular races.

  • » The Glencoe Summerfest 2009 photo book includes many shots from the Glencoe Grand prix. Sales benefit the Glencoe Educational Foundation.

  • » Speaking of which, only two more days left to pre-order your Chicago cyclocross book and enter the raffle for free bacon.

  • » The Illinois Cycling Association meets this Saturday in Lisle. In an effort to give better lead time in the future, meetings are now established on the second Saturdays of September, October, November, January, February, March, and April.

  • » John Wilke put together a video recap of the 2009 season.

  • » The Allvoi Cup returns to the track Aug. 6-8. Voytek Glinkowski (WDT-Allvoi) says he expects between $9,000 and $15,000 in prize money. Qualification heats will start that Friday at noon. Mass-start races are open to Cat 4 and above, and the open categories will be capped at 40 riders.

  • » Another new squad for 2010: Vic Rentas sends word of Team G Force out of Park Ridge. Membership is open.

  • » Excellent recap of a rookie season from Sarah Lu (Half Acre Cycling). “I generally didn’t come in last, and I managed not to break my face.” (Those were my goals my first season, too.)

  • » Don’t forget to register for Sunday’s cyclocross banquet in Skokie.

  • » And only 10 days left to pre-order your cyclocross photo book. Pre-ordering lets you sidestep shipping charges and enters you in a raffle for 2 pounds of premium bacon.

  • » Baroudeurs and rouleurs report in 52 days.

More than likely this will be available only through Cafe Press.)

  • » It makes me think seriously about grad school: The 2010 collegiate national championships will be in Madison, Wis., and a source tells me the road race will employ the popular Blue Mounds course. Masters championships won’t be far, either, returning to Louisville, although later in the season: Aug. 1-7.

  • » Update: Thanks to Mike Ebert (ABD) for noting a significant point that I missed: The 2010 elite national criterium championships will be held in conjunction with the elite road race championships, which are slated for Bend, Ore. That is a major blow to Downers Grove. With the Chicago Criterium in question, it may mean we never see the nation’s best women race, which is a huge loss.

  • » “Race Across the Sky,” a documentary about this year’s Leadville 100 mountain bike race, returns for a second showing Thursday. (Since AMC River East botched the initial showing, the dirtbags of The Bonebell are heading to Evanston.)

  • » More than 60 women attended Half Acre Cycling’s women’s night last week. Coincidentally, Sunday’s cross race had the largest women’s turnout of the year.

  • » North Branch Cycling is having a fall social in Deer Park on Friday. The team invites interested riders from anywhere but particularly the northwest suburbs. Contact Rob Roop for directions.

  • » Turin is again holding a winter food drive. Food can be dropped off at the shop in Evanston or at the state cross championships on Dec. 6.

  • » Lower race fees. Bigger purses and a sweet raffle. A chance to party with the Cuttin’ Crew. Should be good times at Indian Lakes this Saturday.

  • » Brilliant. In Minnesota cyclocross, the winner of the 4’s race gets a bag of sand. (Because our friends up north are soft and afraid to race in the cold and snow of December, Minnesota’s state championships are this weekend. A source tells me it will be epic.)

  • » Recently I was driving west to the races in Dekalb when I saw a familiar white school bus up the road. As I made the pass, I rolled down the window and pumped my fist in the universal sign for “Hey, mister, blow your horn!” A satisfying belch erupted from the right lane, and I was a happy boy. Two weeks later, the Cuttin’ Cruiser is in a spot of trouble. If the Cruiser or its passengers have ever put a smile on your face, consider throwing in a buck or two.

  • » Half Acre Cycling invites all women who race -- or who would like to -- to an evening of beer and chocolate on Nov. 4.

Meanwhile, our friends in Minnesota are hoping Chicago riders make the trip to their state championship weekend, Nov. 14-15, where $4,000 cash and $7,000 in merchandise is up for grabs.

  • » Illinois’ junior senator paid a visit to the Little 500 this weekend but didn’t stick around to watch the Cutters prevail yet again. (Check out this photo of Mike Sherer, sporting the Pony Shop colors. His team would come in 3rd.)

  • » Ron Cook (Project 5 Racing) dug up some Sun-Times coverage from the 1987 Citi-Circuit, a weekend of criteriums in Downers Grove, Evanston and downtown Chicago.  Total purse for the weekend was $75,000, which back then was quite a bit of scratch. Downers Grove was on the same course we know today, and Evanston was similar to last year’s Evanston Grand Prix. The Chicago course was located near the spot of this year’s Chicago Criterium, but instead of ducking down to Michigan Avenue it included two 180-degree turns on Columbus, not unlike the Tour of Elk Grove course. Note also the snarky lede from reporter Kevin Williams, now a track sprinter for Alberto’s: “Memo to racers: Don’t fall asleep out there, as these aren’t the most exciting courses in the world.” This from a man who has spent most of his cycling life turning left.

  • » There’s no sound more beautiful than an exciting race being called in Italian. “Un attacco! Un attacco! Vittoria storica! Eroica!”

  • » Run a red -- allegedly -- go to jail. Welcome to the new Chicago. Elsewhere, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department recently had a word with the Judson Ride after it rolled through a stop sign on Everett, and this week the Glencoe police stopped a Met Cycling rider for going through a red light, with “no traffic and sleet falling from the sky at about 6:15 a.m.”

  • » Coincidentally, a new study finds that 96 percent of Chicago drivers exceed the speed limit by 5 mph or more. CBF notes that when cars strike pedestrians at 40 mph, the victims stand a 20 percent chance of survival.

  • » Psyche yourself up for Hillsboro with this trailer for an upcoming Paris-Roubaix documentary. ("Every day when I wake up, I see myself winning it.” Poor George. I know the feeling.)

  • » The popular Turin ride resumes tonight at 5:30. It doesn’t move to 6 until Memorial Day, and lights are recommended during March.

  • » Some lucky fans catch a foul ball. Some lucky fans catch a Zipp wheel.
  • » Chris Horner’s cross bikes are for sale. Legs and all-around awesomeness not included.
  • » Two early races suggest officials are enforcing the centerline rule harder than ever this year. At the Froze Toes Road Race in Columbia, Mo., many riders were disqualified after their race. And at last week’s collegiate road race in Indiana, an entire field was sanctioned for excessive violations. (Race reports here, and here, and here, and here.) Hillsboro-Roubaix has its share of narrow roads. I wouldn’t be surprised if enforcement there is just as vigorous. It will result in some tense, congested riding, but you’ve been warned: Be patient or be gone.
  • » Punk Rock Cycling in Iowa is offering babysitting at its races.
  • » Monster Track, a major alleycat in New York, has canceled this weekend’s street race, partly in response to last week’s tragedy in Chicago. The announcement cited safety concerns associated with the event’s growth and its popularity among non-messengers. (I’m told not to expect the Tour da Chicago to return this year, if ever.)

  • » This week’s Tour of California has a few Chicago connections. Today’s wearer of the yellow jersey, Tyler Farrar (Slipstream), won a national championship at Downers Grove in 2005. His teammate Christian Vandevelde is a native of Lemont. Riding for Jelly Belly is former ABD rider Bryce Mead, and riding for Kelly Benefit Strategies is Reid Mumford, formerly of XXX Racing-AthletiCo and ABD. Riding for Toyota-United are 2007 Elk Grove winner Ivan Dominguez and the Clarke brothers: Hilton won at Elk Grove and Downers Grove in 2006, and in 2007 Jonny raced Superweek and other local crits. Finally, winning Monday’s women’s criterium was Brooke Miller (Tibco), who recently did a short stint in the Chicago area. Kristen Meshberg (Flatlandia) was there, too, and finished 36th.

  • » Rarely a week goes by that someone doesn’t ask me to cover the track. Or cyclocross. Or mountain biking. My standard reply is: “Meh. Do it yourself if it’s so bloomin’ important to you.” Happily, people are finally answering my challenge. Welcome The Bone Bell, a site devoted to mountain biking and other dirty pursuits in the Chicago area.  And welcome Midwest Time Trial, compliments of my teammate Peter Allen. That takes care of two disciplines. Who will now step up and claim chicagotrackracing.com and chicagocrossracing.com?

  • » Speaking of disciplines other than the road, Lawyer Jim is getting through winter by thinking about the coming bike polo season.

  • » An angry driver attacked Mike Sherer (Pony Shop) and a training partner near Bloomington, Ind., this weekend. Nobody was injured, and police arrested the driver.

  • » In Lake County, an SUV struck and killed a 25-year-old man riding at night on Highway 59 in Ingleside. Police are still searching for the driver, but he or she was kind enough to leave evidence at the scene. Let’s hope an arrest happens soon.

  • » Project 5 Racing has rolled out its new Web site. The team has new uniforms as well. (Red and black appears to be the new black.)

  • » How cold was it at Sunday’s Tour da Chicago alleycat? this cold. Fifty riders showed up. Last week’s interviewee Jeff Perkins (Chicago Cuttin’ Crew) won the stage but Nico West (XXX Racing-AthletiCo) retains the coveted orange sweater.

  • » Last week our mayor introduced some bike-friendly legislation. As is often the case with such stories, the anti-bike reaction was dispiriting, but worth reading is Payton Chung’s rejoinder: “Cars kill more Americans than guns do. That’s why we license drivers -- but not bicycles, which kill fewer Americans each year than beds do. Yes, beds.

  • » I didn’t think Bike Snob NYC had a sentimental bone in his body, but Sheldon Brown always did bring out the good in people. Naz Hamid (Half Acre) has a graphical tribute on his blog, one of thousands of tributes available on the Web, most along the lines of “I owe my bike to Sheldon Brown.”

  • » The Rivendell Reader had a long interview with Brown in 2001. Interesting fact: His wife’s first words to him were, “Oh, you’re riding fixed-gear!”* And here is Brown’s last post to Bike Forums, one of 2,302 he made over the past six years, in which within 30 minutes of it being asked he answers a question about threading an obscure freewheel. Cycling this week lost a giant.

  • » I’ve linked to it before, but the Punk Rock Cycling Web site has had a flurry of activity lately, much of it specific to issues women face in cycling. PRC is a new Iowa team founded by former Chicagoan Donny Quixote, and its roster includes former Chicago messenger and XXX Racing-AthletiCo rider Jen Greenberg. (Thanks, Jim.)

  • » A truck pulling a horse trailer struck three cyclists riding near St. Louis. One of them, Shawn O’Neal (The Bike Center), says the driver “went out of way to run us over.” Unlike our own hit-and-run this fall, this one caused significant injuries, and the driver remains at large.

  • » Two more new teams for you: The team formerly known as Team Clif Bar Midwest has jumped into a phone booth, spun around and emerged as Vitaminwater-Trek, under the organizing umbrella of Burnham Racing. And from Roscoe Village comes Spider Monkey Cycling, whose creators apparently agree with me that “Talladega Nights” is the greatest cycling movie ever made -- so long as you pretend the cars are bicycles. (“You need to grab hold of that line between speed and chaos, and you need to wrestle it to the ground like a demon cobra.”)

  • » Former XXX Racing-AthletiCo junior Rebecca Much has signed with 2007 NRC champion Webcor. After racing with T-Mobile for just over a season, Much took some time off before being cajoled back into racing this summer, as she documents in this diary entry for the U.S. Women’s Cycling Development Program. “That’s right: I’m back and taking every step to keep it that way.” (Thanks, Jeff!)

  • » Julie Eisenhardt (Half Acre) attended the USA Cycling mechanics clinic last week. “I felt like for four days I was among superheroes,” she says, “and was occasionally treated like one myself.” She shares her experiences on her blog: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4.

  • » All the construction on Sheridan Road? CDOT insider Grant Davis (XXX Racing-AthletiCo) tells us it’s to reduce the four-lane stretch to one lane in each direction plus bike lanes and a turn lane. More information here. This should promote everyone’s safety and improve car-bike relations on that popular corridor. The bad news? It won’t be done until summer 2009.

  • » Here’s another new team you can add to your blogroll: Welcome, Beverly Bike/Vee Pak.

  • » Next Saturday, Jan. 19, is the Chicago Winter Bike Swap, hosted by Project 5 Racing.

  • » Results for the first of ABD’s indoor time trials are online. Once again Mark Swartzendruber (Lucas Oil) delivered some hurt, placing not once but twice in the top three. Coming in 2nd on the day was second-year pro Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit Strategies).

  • » In the time trial results I see some riders from a mysterious Burnham Racing squad. I have no idea what this team is all about. Appears to have something to do with celebrity gossip and supermodels.

  • » According to this tentative schedule posted at the Pony Shop Cyclocross blog and elsewhere, the Chicago Cross Cup has seven races planned for 2008. The newest addition will be the Old Towne Vande-Cross in Moline, Ill. That’s a bit of a trek, but the more, the muddier. Jackson Park will again kick off the series, on Sept. 21, a mere 255 days away.
