This Saturday, August 9th, is the The Wood Dale Criterium, featuring ABR"s Illinois State Criterium Championship Race.  As one of the longest continuously running Midwest races, this is really a classic.  We talked with Bob Lund to learn a little more about the event.

Chicago Bike Racing: Thanks for another year of The Wood Dale Criterium.  How many years has the race been goiing now?

Bob LundThe Original Wood Dale Criterium was first held over 25 years ago by Greg Bagni and Redline Racing. Redline Racing was one of the power house racing clubs in the Midwest for many years, with several members going to World Championships and Pan Am Games. Many of the original or near original members of Redline were involved with organizing the race throughout the years.

CBR: RedLine Racing?  I do remember racing those guys back in the 90’s/00’s

BL: Redline Racing sponsored by Village CycleSport in Elk Grove, IL a few years ago became Village/Verdigris racing team sponsored by Village CycleSport and Verdigris Homes.

CBR:  This is ABR’s Ilinois State Criterium Championship.

BL:Yes, this year we’ve continued to get good support from ABR, who stepped up to continue the Original Wood Dale Criterium.  This has been the ABR Illinois Crit Championship since 1995.

We hope to see 2013 Champions try to defend their title. Tim Clark, Marian Kielar, Bob Burns, Bob Beck, Nancy Beck, Pat Beam, Gerald Beam, Ashley Korol, Kate Isermann, Fernanda Guzman, Joan Hanscom, Marilyn Powell, Jack Thompson, Sean McCarthy, Nick Adler, Carlos Guzman, Danielle Krebs, Gary Doering, Todd Metz, Elliot Paine, Danny Mackey, Brian Karlow, Andrew Rizzo, Brian Ellison, and Fernando Barraza.

CBR: Tell us a little about the course and race tactics.

BL: The original course is still raced. 0.7 miles in length, wide roads, with one uphill on Mittel Dr, Pond Dr, Wheat Ln in Oakwood Industrial Park, Wood Dale, IL.  In recent years it has been called the Wood Dale South Course. The only time it was held on the North course was during road rebuilding. The course curves around a bit, with only two actual corners, one before the uphill and one afterwards, then you have 250 meters to the finish line.

CBR: Thanks Bob - appreciate the effort!
