Lombard Criterium wrap-up

Posted by Seth Meyer

Sunday there was a local race alternative to traveling up to Whitefish Bay, Wis., for the last day of Superweek. Athletes By Design stepped in at the last minute to pick up the Illinois ABR Criterium Championships, to be held on the same course as the Lombard Fall Fling criterium. Surprisingly large numbers showed up for most events, with 40-50 racers coming out for the 3's, 4's and Masters races.

Being an Illinois championship event and a Chicagloand criterium, the results were dominated mostly by the Chicagoland riders who came out. It would be quite the tall order to name all the area top 10s (which, even if you don't get your name on CBR, is a great situation for the local scene, I tell you!). So below is a short list of the highlights.

Scott Pearson (Higher Gear) took the Masters 30+ and the P/1/2 championships with the same move, a hard attack out of the breakaway with two laps to go. The strong ABD women's duo was finally held winless this year in the W-P/1/2/3 field by Devon Haskell (Team Get A Grip Cycles) and her aggressive, pre-emptive tactics in the event. The Cat 3 race came down to a bunch sprint, which Adam Lesniakowski (Redline) won very closely over Jason Mindeman (Team Clif Bar Midwest). ABD took home a race win in the Cat 4 race, courtesy of Tim Keeley. Finally, although the team couldn't convert its tactics into a win, MetLife was out in full force in all of the Masters races, putting on an excellent clinic for strategy, just missing out on the final kick to the line sometimes.

Lombard Criterium results.

Race reports:
Devon Haskell (Team Get A Grip Cycles; W-P/1/2/3): "Knowing that I wouldn't be able to survive their attacks for long, I decided to try attacking myself and managed to split up the two teammates."

Seth Meyer (Team Get A Grip Cycles; P/1/2): "That was pretty fun: Breakaway from the gun to the end. Very Jens Voigt, especially the not winning the sprint part."

Scott Van Maldegiam (Spin Doctor Cyclewerks; 4): "I would get shuffled back, but I would always make my way back to the front. Then I made my first stupid move of the day."

There are a few corrections to be made to the Cat 4 results, mainly to fill in the blanks. So if you aren't listed, be patient. My wife took pictures from the opposite side of the road and the officials are looking at those pictures as well.

Thanks, Scott, for that clarification. I'll keep my out for them on the ABR web site too when they come up.
