Tip #14: Remember everything

With a lot of out-of-town racing coming up with Superweek, Michael Kelly (South Chicago Wheelmen) reminds me that this is a good time to hone your pre-race checklist. You don't want to be three hours from home and realize you've forgotten your shoes. (Or the key to your roof rack, which I've seen happen more than once.)

Kelly sends along this pre- and post-race checklist from Smart Cycling of Glenview, which one could use as a starting point for coming up with one's own checklist.

Here's a spread of things I brought to a stage race last year. I always try to pack the night before, so that I have a chance in the morning to figure out what I've forgotten. Then as I leave the house I do a quick mental scan from head to toe -- Helmet! Sunglasses! Jersey! Gloves! Bibs! Socks! Shoes! -- and try to remember packing each of these essentials.

Good stuff for sure. I usually try and keep specific shoes and gear on the wall rack with the specific bike. I am glad to know that I am not the only one who makes a lot of lists.

I would add that if you're staying overnight for a race the next morning, don't forget breakfast.

I used to keep a couple of packets of instant oatmeal and some protein powder in my race bag. If the race was early in the morning, I could always stop at a gas station for some hot water and stir myself up some protein-and-carb-laden pre-race fuel.

When I'm leaving the house I make sure I have the five things I absolutely cannot race without. Bike, helmet, shoes, kit, and license, if not pre registered then cash also! I know thats 6 now.

Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, I will bring rain and cold weather gear regardless of what the weather man says.
